Hmmm?

Only you can really answer that, have a look at the original at full size. If the trees are pretty much sharp, that would suggest the camera focused on them. If they're not sharp, then it may well be that the boats had moved towards you enough to throw them out of focus.

More sharp than the boats are. I think they are, but it is hard to say for sure at this size.

And the only embarassment with missing the focus point is when it's not a moving target.

Just looks to me (at this size) that the camera's focused on the trees, so as Don says, probably just missed the target, which would have been just to one side of centre, and got the background instead.

Unfortunately, if we're honest, it happens to us all now and again.

IMHO, the main use for a grey card today is to help with colour balance.

Absolutely.

It's less probable that you'll use coloured filters of any kind, except maybe Graduated Neutral Density (ND Grads) filters...
A coloured neutral filter? Where can I get one of those?

Fair enough! Never did much B+W stuff myself. However, I understood that the point was you metered from a particular area of your subject, decided zone you wanted to put that in, and adjusted your exposure accordingly. That's not the same as using a grey card, so I don't see how the two relate.

That doesn't necessarily mean that he used one though (I don't know whether he did or didn't).

The zone system is all about placing the different tones in the landscape within the zones from black to white, and doesn't bear much relation to 18% grey at the scene. You could be metering a polar bear and decide to place it in zone 3, the zone system just tells you how much compensation you need to apply to your meter reading.

Also, though, it struck me how all the controls on the '10 are very similar to the *istD, but they feel sooooo much nicer.

There's been some nice design/development work in the intervening years.
The four way switch in particular is much nicer on the K10D IMHO. And I prefer the position of the Green button. And there's the storage space in the grip. And a green button there too...
