so the OS is writing to the card's filesystem

Why would you choose a tablet device to store your images?
I'm currently looking at a Nexus 7" mark 2 with 32Gb memory. I've not found any tablet yet that has more. For me, shooting raw, that's less than 2 x 16Gb cards worth of images, assuming other stuff I need to be on the tablet uses some of that 32Gb.
Some have a built in microSD slot which will expand the storage and will support up to 32GB cards

It might be struggle to write anything of significant length on a tablet, or code, or edit photos or whatever...

I work with technology in my job so I'm no dinosaur when it comes to the latest kit, but I just find the laptop more flexible, faster, easier to use etc
I think Apple products are very good, but overpriced and I have an objection in principle to their restrictive practices. I also think they will be dead in the water in a few years time unless they change (which I don't think they can).
Subjective, but no I don't think for anything Apple offer the best value for money. Be it computers, phones or tablets.

I can't remember what filesystem it uses (Pentax DSLR formatted card), its probably supported well enough under linux though.
-----------------------------
If you were using NTFS though, you might not trust it from Mac or Linux (if you were paranoid).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NTFS#Mac_OS_X
Native NTFS write support has been discovered in Mac OS X 10.6 and later, but is not activated by default, although workarounds do exist to enable the functionality. However, user reports indicate the functionality is unstable and tends to cause kernel panics, probably the reason why write support has not been enabled or advertised.
Due to the complexity of internal NTFS structures, both the built-in 2.6.14 kernel driver and the FUSE drivers disallow changes to the volume that are considered unsafe, to avoid corruption.

]$ mkdir /tmp/pentax
]$ unzip -d /tmp/pentax/ 1366296603_k5_2_104.zip
Archive: 1366296603_k5_2_104.zip
inflating: /tmp/pentax/k5_2_104/fwdc216b.bin
]$ find /tmp/pentax/ -name "*"
/tmp/pentax/
/tmp/pentax/k5_2_104
/tmp/pentax/k5_2_104/fwdc216b.bin
I see no reason why it wouldn't work from linux, you then just copy the .bin to the SD card. But it won't be a supported OS no doubt and if the camera got bricked they'd probably point to the OS even if it wasn't that. Might be best to follow the supported procedure.

18-55mm WR kit lens
15mm DA f4 definitely a keeper
35mm FA f2
50mm M f1.7
100mm WR f2.8
55-300mm DA f3.5-5.8
The 15mm is the one I can't see losing. The rest could possibly go. I think it makes to keep the 50mm M 1.7 for night stuff and street.
I'm looking at various zooms.
I'm now able to increase ISO having gone from K-7 to K-5iis. In the past I've had the 35mm f2 glued to the K-7.
I'm seriously thinking of going to
15mm DA f4
50mm M f1.7
50-135mm DA* f2.8
If I found myself missing the FA 35mm f2 I could perhaps get the 35mm DA f2.4 down the line.
Any input welcome. Yes I may have lost the plot

Just curious as I've started to realise my 55-300mm DA isn't seeing a huge amount of action. No mountain ranges to point it at etc.
I've got a 100mm wr which will do macro work.

I tried the Kindle Fire HDX and for £169 it beats the iPad mini hands down, lovely little tablet but the screen is just to small, hardly any apps available compared to the rest of the market and feels cheap in the hand, but for a good £100 less then the iPad mini it must be a bargain.
