I wanted to buy a camera that I could grow into.
With the right attitude, thought, and care, there's no reason why getting a really good camera as a first one isn't just as good a way of developing skills as getting something less capable to start with and then growing out of it.

It's a simple enough assumption to think that the screens on the back of both DSLRs and P&Ss would do the same thing.
I did a silly thing the other day at a party BTW. I was asked to take a photo of a couple using their camera.. a P&S.. and I held it up to my face to look through the (non-existent) viewfinder.
Hands up anyone else who's done that..

So where's the problem exactly?

Just to put this in perspective...
I think, to correct you Pete, you are looking for Samsung or Sigma units that are compatible with Pentax.
That completely changes the tone of your topic header! It's that level of mis-representation that's going to stop people from helping you in the future
I've had little problem getting PENTAX units
Matt
Above speaks the man who got a Pentax flash within about a day of us all convincing him to buy it, and now he's sold it to George (have you posted it yet, Pete?), he's already moaning that he can't find a non-Pentax product, and blaming, yes, you guessed it, Pentax.
Go figure.

But two months is not long, so I'd give it a go anyway. Write a letter putting your case, keep it polite but firm and hope for the best. It is the suppliers responsibility to sort it out in any event, at least in the UK.
If there is going to be any delay I'd be tempted to buy the Samsung one for £49.99 and get most or all of that back later on via an eBay sale.

It still won't lock focus correctly at infinity when set to 200mm and seems to be a bit off in other aspects of focusing.
Is it new enough to persuade the shop to exchange it? Fit for purpose and all that...

A zoom technically means focus is kept spot-on as you zoom. A varifocal has to be refocused at every focal length setting. There will be a point where a cheap badly designed "zoom" is actually more of a varifocal. To be honest, I usually refocus after zooming as a matter of habit.
I guess it's just a limitation of the design of something with such a big zoom range.
In Tyr's case, I would have thought that if his 50-200 is miles different from his other lenses in terms of where it ends up being focused (for a given focal length setting), then that's grounds enough for getting a replacement. Only once it focuses correctly at all would I be inclined to worry about having to refocus after zooming.

he, he... dunno if I can get that past the wife. But I suppose for the price of the DA* lenses, the extra body won't even be noticed.
Now, just have to figure out exactly where can I sell that second kidney?
