You did better than I did at that show. A worse test of reactions and AF speed I can barely imagine.

This was the best I could manage, and it's hard to imagine a more dreadful pose for the bird, or a more horrible background . It's a fab show, though, for sure.
What lens did you use Chris :
It was the FAJ 75-300 I think. I found this too, your Wedgetail I think, but it was awfully underexposed against the sky, and took a fair bit of mucking about with to see any detail.

For my course next weekend I have to produce a low key b/w photo.

This is the one I am happiest with.

All comments welcome!

I do like it. However, I think there are a number of distracting elements, notably the marks on the fingerboard (especially between the lowest two strings), the curve of the pick-guard where the edge is just under the high E string, and the attachment points at each end of the pickup.

I love the idea, and I think the curve of light at the left edge of the body is just sublime, but it needs just a touch more work, I think. If you had access to a guitar without the pick-guard and pickup, those elements might be easier to remove.

Or, meter in manual mode (with the green button is easiest with the K10D since it also sets the exposure and you can change it from there if you want) looking through the finder, and then it won't change when you move away.

I had a brief look through this PDF earlier too - I thought it was all just a hoax to start with, but it certainly seems not to be.

The snag is that the 16 mega pixels of the sensor are only down to 90,000 microlenses. So you get lower effective resolution - because the distance information is spread across multiple sensor sites.

At least that's how I read it.... I could be wrong of course
I see it as a start, rather than a snag. According to Wikipedia, the first commercially available (I use the word 'available' loosely - apparently it was $30,000) dSLR was only 1.3 MP.

I wonder what the lower limit of the size of the microlenses is, though, and whether it's small enough to eventually catch up with and pass the sort of resolutions we see now.

Very good, Chris, nice and crisp.

Was this the dental version or the standard version of the lens?
Thank you. I think it must be the standard one. It just says 'SMC Pentax-A Macro 1:4 100mm', and there's nothing about it that looks unusual compared with any of the A-series lenses I've come across.

It's the same lens with extra magnification markings on the barrel. Also in the kit are close up lenses, colour coded to the barrel markings.
Ah.

Well I must say, I've been very pleased with it. Not that I've done much particularly to test it - but most of my eBay pictures in recent times have been taken with it, as well as this:

... which is a crop of about a quarter of the width of the K10D frame.

It depends on the condition and the version. I have bought SMC Pentax-M 100mm f4 Macro lenses in mint condition for under £100, but these days prices are going up rapidly.
I bought an A- one of these some months ago for under £100.

It's in perfect condition AFAICT, but it's not for sale

What's different about a Dental Macro lens?

I have just got a K100d and would like to know how to find out how ifind out which version is on mine?
If you type "download k100d firmware" into Google, you'll find that the first link in the search results contains precise instructions for upgrading the firmware, and includes an answer to this question.
