Jing is what you need.

That's not down to the gear.
It really is.

Unfortunately, I suspect I'll have to switch brands (or discover that the K-3 solves my problems) to prove that to your satisfaction.

Convincing you will not contribute to my reasons for switching brands, or buying a K-3 if either happens, so we'll just have to agree to disagree for now.

If you are of the technically influenced nature then more that likely a Pentax will not press your buttons, you will be chasing after some FF DSLR that you will decide based on some number published on some site somewhere on the interweb. More than likely you will use the kit lens that comes with said FF camera and be happy in the knowledge that this camera is the best that you can possibly buy and will happily tell all your family, friends and colleagues. You may then decide that you need another lens or two and will spend another month or so researching which lens you think you need and then pay big money for a lens which you think you need but will hardly ever use because it is too big, too heavy and needs a modicum of skill to return the quality that you have researched so carefully.

A Pentax user is of a slightly different nature, by in large we are more discrete creatures, we prefer ergonomics over button count, primes over zooms. We look for character in our lenses and will pay a premium for extra tactile feel. We get extra satisfaction from turning up at an event and creating images without flash that the subject actually likes, we are nerds but of a higher class. We can be quite disdainful of the other brands but sometimes will feel a teeny bit envious due to the extra advertising and word count in magazines that they get. We get annoyed when someone from Nikon wonders why we pay £799 for a 77mm f/1.8 that is screw driven when they can have a 85 f/1.8 with a built in motor for under half the price and it is sharper to boot!
This certainly doesn't describe me at all. I'm quite technical, but the first paragraph is nothing like me, and although I like Pentax ergonmics much more than the other brands, I have hardly any primes, and I certainly get no pleasure whatsoever from paying over the odds for something just because it says 'limited'.

As a generalisation, I think this is nonsense, and to describe Pentax users as higher class than users of Nikon or Canon sounds dreadfully arrogant to me. Certainly a lot of people probably buy the bigger brands because they're the most well known, but to dismiss a lot of intelligent users of other systems like this sounds dreadful to me.

It might be how you see yourself, of course, but these views IMO are what get Pentax users something of a bad name.

I think most people stick with Pentax simply because it meets most of their needs, most of the time.

For those like me, who can't afford two systems, and where the requirements are a difficult combination, it's a tough choice.

Chris, what is it you need from your camera that Pentax cant deliver? (not being a dick Mate just wondering is all)
I didn't at all take that the wrong way - it's a perfectly fair question.

The main thing is the K-5 AF, since aeroplanes in flight (and to a lesser extent birds) are what I like photographing most of all. I've got massively fed up with the low proportion of keepers I get. I have a ridiculous number of shots where the timing and exposure are fine, it's just enough OOF to not make the cut.

So the main thing is that I want the AF to be a lot better than the K-5.

However, I also shoot at lowish light dance events, where I need ambient light rather than flash, so I need as short an exposure as possible. So high-ISO performance and accurate focusing is also important. Ultra fast AF with tracking isn't quite so important, but it does need to be accurate.

I'm not too bothered about the run of the mill stuff, I'm sure the K-3 is very good. But it's a big outlay, so I don't want the K-3 to be just a little bit better at the things I like the most - I want it to be a major step forward.

I don't want to get the K-3, discover it's still not really enough of a step forward, and then end up changing brands, although of course the D7200 will probably be out by then, and leapfrog in front again, so it may be a much easier decision in 6 months time.

Or it may not, I don't know. All I do know is that I've massively lost my whole photography mojo, and that I'm not getting any younger.

And the way the prices have suddenly leaped upwards is another blow.

If the high iso noise had been the same as the k-5 then that wouldn't have been so bad but worse, we're back to k-7 issues.

i can see all the benefits of all the other k-3 improvements but shouldn't we be seeing a constant improvement in high iso noise? The k-5 is three years old and the new model has worse iso noise, that's a backwards step in my opinion, despite the pixel race...
Yes, it's very reminiscent of when the K-7 came out.

My memory (I never had a K-7) is that in many ways it was a lot better than the K20D, but it wasn't long before there was quite a bit of disappointment being expressed. It was why I never got the K-7.

And then the K-5, or arguably the K-5ii, was what many people wished the K-7 had been.

I already watch Strictly. It's just great telly. And with Tess, Claudia, Abby, Sophie and the female pros to ogle, it doesn't get any better...

And, just to annoy everyone, I used to be a competitive ballroom dancer, so I know when the judges are talking shite as well.

Smegs, just out of interest, what sort of pictures do you take that are taken in light so low, are blown up so big, and need detail so fine, that a bit of NR and careful sharpening at high ISO won't do the trick?

I mean, I love the clean images that the K-5 produces too, and it's a shame that the sensor hasn't moved as far forward as the rest of the K-3, but in reality, does it really make that much difference?

Jus' askin',
