i've just acquired a DA* 55mm, it arrived yesterday. The seller said he bought it new and used it twice, but hasn't used it for the past 2 years. Now it arrived and the autofocus doesn't work. Known problem.
The price was very good, but still it was supposed to work.
The seller is offering for me to return it or give me a discount (i don't know for how much). I've tried it in manual and the results are great but manual focus is a pain (it's mainly to shoot my kids indoor so a lot of movement).
Question is: is the AF (when it works) good enough or do people end up using it on MF anyway?
I need to reply today on whether i keep it or not..
thanks!

I've used the 21mm HD Ltd lens, my copy seems very sharp, also it's light and tiny on the camera body. Here's a example of an image using it:

Keep them, unless you don't have the space or really need the money you would get from selling them. You might not use them now, but one day your kids will grow up and leave home, or they will decide that being photographed by you is totally unbearable, so you will develop new photographic interests. Those old lenses might then be just what you need. Who needs an aperture ring or manual focus nowadays? Well, if one day you decide to try macro via the cheap routes of either reversing a wide-angle lens or using extension tubes, then an aperture ring is your friend and auto-focus is useless (as it is for most macro). As for landscape, camera on tripod then slow and steady with manual focus can be a great antidote to the speed and pressures of life.
Not sure if that helps. But it's my approach to most things, not just photography. Which goes a long way to explaining why my house is full of stuff, much of which doesn't get used very often!
Steve
It also happened to me that i look for a lens and realized i've sold it many years ago. Kind of funny how one forgets, i've been digging old emails to realize i have owned many lenses.
but yes the default will be to stick to them, it's more a fear of things becoming obsolete (like my old MZ30), i guess it's different with older lenses like the K, SMC A, M etc.. where i don't mind sticking to them, but my view is more that i would prefer they get used than taking dusks and be found in my cellar 40 years from now when i pass away, i don't assume they can be recycled/reused to repair something else..

Nice one Steve.
I gave up on Photoshop, Lightroom and Affinity et al as being too complicated for my limited brain to understand (genuine comment, not sarcasm!). I'm left with simple but usually effective Topaz and Faststone. I similarly can't comprehend the fuss over RAW except that it's demanded by serious contests to prove it isn't an AI generated image. I now save as both for that reason but I never touch the RAW versions and always work from the jpegs. I've tried both and can't see one iota of difference!
Getting back to the point - the TAIR still comes out on top.
Maybe it's worth you taking a class or watching one basic tutorial on youtube to learn how to use basic functions of LR? (i have Lightroom 3 which is 15 years old, maybe simpler to use i don't know, i probably don't even use it fully).

So my question is: what should we do with those older lenses? keep them (for no reason) or sell them for almost nothing? or who wants them (photo schools?)??
The ones that would probably go:
- Tammy 17-50 (which has a bit of movement so no longer in pristine condition)
- Sigma 10-20 f4-5.6
- the older 50mm SMC A f1.7, great lens but i have a FA 1.7 and a K 55mm so hard to justify having 3.
- Sigma 24mm 2.8m macro (manual focus).. love it but not suitable for my shooting (kids moving, now overlapping with my new 21mm)
Any tips/advice welcome
