The original jpeg (RAW+) of my shot appears to be sharper than the one I initially uploaded based on the RAW file. This jpeg is only cropped. I also include a handheld attempt from 17. september (5 days after full moon).

Thank you for very interesting comments! When I did my shots of the moon on Wednesday, I focused on different aperture settings. The next time I will try to "focus on focus", maybe manual focus could be a way to go?

When discussing different photos of the moon, I rather like this image, done by a Norwegian photographer:

ChrisA: I seem to be one step behind you here... I took the photos with AF on. Could that possibly be a problem (should I have used manual focus)?

How high in the sky was it when you took it?

Conditions were quite good, I thought, when the moon was full the other day.
I took the photo at roughly 20 minutes before midnight Wednesday 12. October (British time), the moon was high in the sky.

What did you do for sharpening?
I used the sharpening tool in iPhoto (100% sharpening + added contrast). I experimented with different apertures and took about 70 photos. The weather was partly clouded, so the atmospheric conditions were probably not optimal. Luckily I will get other chances of capturing the moon

To be honest I think it could be a lot sharper. However, atmospheric conditions will play a large part in this so it may not be anything that could be helped.
Thank you for your comment! When attempting the moon shots I used a tripod, turned the SR off and used the 2 second self-timer. I will definitely make further attempts at getting better shots of the moon, atmospheric conditions could possibly be a major factor here.

I had a go at capturing the full moon on Wednesday this week with the Tokina AT-X 80-400mm. I shot RAW+ and did some adjustments (mostly sharpening) in iPhoto on the RAW file, before exporting to jpeg. What do you think? This is the very first time I deal with RAW files, so I have quite a steep learning curve to get things right.

I am currently saving up funds to purchase a DA* 16-50mm. Based on user experience and other information found on the internet, I am pretty certain that I will be very happy with this lens. I believe the trio of zoom lenses developed in co-operation with Tokina, the DA 12-24, DA* 16-50 and DA* 50-135, are all exceptional lenses.

I am not sure exactly what kind of information you are wanting, but I will have a go at it anyway. Third-party lenses with Pentax bayonet mount often have a "PK" engraved somewhere on the mount (obviously:lol. For information about the different types of SMC Pentax mounts I would recommend studying the homepage of bdimitrov about the evolution, names and features of the Pentax K-mount:

Happy reading

I guess you will receive more expert advice from more competent forum members.

You should have a go at the moon with your 80-400 if you haven't already.

Tripod, careful focusing, 2s delayed/3s remote mode, trial and error on the exposure, but aim for 1/100 or shorter. It's not difficult, but it does require patience.
I bought my first tripod just some weeks ago. Once the weather permits I will surely try some moon shots with the 80-400
