Thank you again ChrisA, most helpful! I prefer the second moon shot. The SMC-A 400mm f5.6 must be a great lens to have in ones collection Maybe I will find a good one with the right price sometime in the future.

Bjørn

Haven't tried it on the K-5 yet - I'm hoping to use it for some moon shots soon - I'll post if I get anything usable.
I will be watching out for the moon shots!

Thanks! The heron looks better at its native 1000px (the forum has squished it).

Heron: F8, 1/15, ISO 200
Swan: F10, 1/640, ISO 400

The EXIF is all there if you have a suitable plugin. I use Exif Viewer in Firefox.
Thank you for the exposure info, I guess I was a bit lazy there

I have become a bit confused when checking second-hand prices of the SMC-A* 300mm f4 compared to the SMC-A 400mm f5.6. The 300mm seems to go for much higher prices than the 400mm, I guess that has to do with the * (star) classification. Anyway, based on your images ChrisA, the 400mm must be a very good lens.

Thank you all for valuable information! I am trying to justify thinking in the direction of acquiring a 400mm prime, even though I have the Tokina 80-400mm (which I thoroughly enjoy btw.).

ChrisA: The images of the Heron and the Swan are impressive! Is it possible to ask what aperture you used on these?

How good is the Pentax SMC-A 400mm f5.6? What kind of price would one have to expect to pay for one in good condition?

I already have a Tokina 80-400mm, which I am using primarily in the process of learning how to take photos of birds. So I am just curious about the quality/value of the Pentax SMC-A 400mm f5.6.

Maybe the Tokina AF 28-70mm f/2.8-2.6 AT-X Pro II could be an option?

I have recently discovered this amazing time-lapse of the Northern Lights film made by Norwegian photographer Terje Sørgjerd. When playing the film, I turn off the sound, the music does not add anything positive to the film.

Maybe this film could be of interest to some of you also:

Slightly off topic maybe, but there was made a quite remarkable "time-lapse film" of the northern lights here in Norway earlier this year. This "time-lapse film" was made from 22 000 single shots:
