Too sharp and the first two look like the wren is oiled.
I like the mouse

Quality lenses (such as macro lenses) have no problem closing after F16, but kit and 'travel zooms' have this problem. After F8-F11 the quality suffers a lot.
Most of the lenses have a sweet spot between F5.6 and F8, where they can achieve the maximum resolution.
Here is an example chart that shows that after F8 the resolution decreases.

Exactly what i meant Not something i would to in long terms.
Manual Focusing is a bit tricky, but when you get used to it's not hard at all.

Smeggy, hope to see you at naked bike ride this year

Processing raws is such an ease with Lightroom 4. It is not hard to bring back or front focused shots to life.
Personally i just apply a little sharp(tweaking with masking and detail options too), a little NR, move the purple and aqua sliders till the chromatic aberrations dissapear. Levels, colors and exposure i tweak after in photoshop.
Sharpening in LR is very sweet!

Live view is for for steady shots, personally after two shots of lv focusing i get too frustrated.
As i mentioned above, after adjusting the viewfinder diopter i solved all my manual focusing problems. Got no problems focusing either on 50 @ 1.7 or 600mm.
Especially after 100mm if you switch the lv it gets very funny, the camera shake reduction goes crazy. But as you increase the millimeters it gets easier to focus as the picture is bigger.

How can you calibrate the camera for a lens that doesn't have contacts and electronics to interact with the body?

Back cap, front UV filter(no cap) and rubber hood 49mm.

First of all adjust your viewfinder magnification. It is critical to be correct. Then focusing with 50/1.7 becomes much easier.

Other thing is to focus from you to infinity... when the confirmation beeps, keep moving the ring slowly till the green hexagon is lit in the viewfinder. Continue to focus while holding the shutter half-pressed... when it disappears you are good to go.

One of the screws was lost and the others was loose. Little tightening and it is all right now.
Got some aperture misalignment... +1.0EV error when stopping down after F2.8. After some 'scientific tests' i managed to get it to no error at all - works excellent at all apertures.
Then again... another problem occurred... i messed up the ribbon cable for the focus limiter-the result is no limiter now. Just Af from infinity to 1:1. Doesn't bother me at all.
When I get back home to Bulgaria where I have the right tools for the complete repair i will fix the ribbon cable and the lens will be back at excellent state.
Better no limiter than no focus at all.
It just behaves as DA/DFA.
