You needed to move slightly to the left so that the twig isn't in the way.
There's plenty there for the green hex. to pick up.
Turn off all AF points apart from the one in the centre of the finder.

Practice focusing on a small box in the house (Asprin box would be fine).

Only while they are wearing them.

Or taking them off.
While they are hanging on a line downstairs and she's on the balcony above armed with ammunition

Use MF but confirm the focus by looking at the green light.
You have to be very precise... the DOF at 300mm is tiny.

A KPS 1.3x Magnifier helps.

Try leaving the battery out for about an hour. Just a chance it may fix it, if not it will have to go back.

I really like the last two shots of the bridge showing the sandstone buttresses.

f/2.8 with studio flash may not be possible unless you can
turn it down to 1/8th or 1/16th power.

At f/2.8 Tungsten would be better.
One reason Metz 58s are so good. They go down to 1/256!
They aren't much use when your using Studio Flash!

The old Sunpaks of about 30 years ago used to go down to 1/125th but it was actually about 1/64th
