I've found the extra battery grip to be well worth the cost, plus the extra grip surface and considerably better vertical grip plus trigger. Add to that, the ability to use AA's if need be.
Then there is the "color correcting fill flash" that was on the original K3 but not quite on the second version. But then again, what type of results could one really hope for with a somewhat limited fill flash, it only boost lighting in a very limited range.
Do you have any flash units for the newer version K3? Or possibly planning on adding in one of the Pentax wr flashes, or maybe one of the after market ones? There's also the group that very rarely use flash at all

Unfortunately haven't had much use for the 201 outside of what you were specifically looking for; to boost up the iso numbers. Outside of the wr feature though, the GN just isn't there for much. Add to that the limited wide angle scope coverage; as it doesn't quite get apsc 18 or beyond. So depending upon subject of one happens to be using a Pentax k3 with any 18mm lens (or wider); one will notice a bit of fall off, and also very limited distances to less than the 8m that is claimed. The two batteries considerably limit the use.
On the other hand, cannot seem to get enough use of the newer 540 (aw). Minus the somewhat limited guide number for the price; it's one of the better hotshoe mounted flash units for Pentax, or better when it's used off camera.
If one can make due without the WR feature... The Metz 64 is near perfection for Pentax, but especially the GN. If one can spare the size and weight the Metz 76 is one of the currently best systems available for Pentax, truly a professional level flash.
In other news... And you may very well have read it here first...
1. That Pentax may be working on a flash unit similar to the Metz 76. Other than size of the flash and that it is not hotshoe, no other specs besides that it will likely have the wr feature, and also about the price level of a newly issued (as in 1st day of initial release) Pentax k3. Let me make sure I'm stating that one correctly, a Pentax flash going at about the same price level as a brand new K3.
2. May very well see more professional line 3rd party flash for Pentax. Most likely Quantum and perhaps items such as (more) Bolt, Phottix, even Nissin

Ok, so does the new Pentax not offer anything extra over and above the Sigma, nothing worth spending some extra on?

Although this particular link doesn't mention your exact example... I've used this company in the past to re-cover three separate cameras: Pentax K1000, Pentax LX, and a Ricoh film camera body. The results are nothing short of perfection. Drop them a note and see what they might be able to do for you.
But naturally without being a Pentax limited variation one would lose one of the Pentax's most valued assets - the WR.
On other sites and also by seeing personal examples... I've already seen various Pentax digital cameras re-covered (by other companies), even redone in titanium. Best example yet, carbon fiber

I'll purchase items from day one, only to have them drop in price over eleven months later. Amount of difference still completely refunded. Plus the credit card offers additional protection on "most items" that is better than most warranties and most insurance policies

Are the extra three elements, and very slight difference in size worth it though? Sigma basically released their almost identical 24-70 (also full frame) how long ago? Based on existing optical comparison is the AW make the Pentax worthy of a few hundred more? Because again, outside of the very minor size difference, there is zero advancement in this lens from years ago - outside of the aw rating
Pentax is capable of better, so why aren't they doing it?

Pentax legacy lens would have more appeal , if manual focussing was easier.
Focusing scales, aperture scales relating to focusing, etc... Or how many lenses out there still have an aperture ring. Sure there are some compromises for size, weight, etc... But guessing that most cannot bother to place fundamental items onto lenses

Yet, if it is outside of that range of lenses (say a nearly identical Sigma full-frame 24-70 f2.8 ) it is unknown if one will be able to use full frame sensor settings with such lenses.
Still, even with a full-frame body and aspc non full-frame lenses, the sensor and mp count will still be high enough for most users and most subjects - it will just be one of the most expensive (switched out) non-full-frame image capturing devices on the market if used in that manner.
Now if there would only be a set of Pentax full-frame extension tubes
