Steady Start

My friend Cliff asked for a monochrome version of yesterdays' shot and also that I clone out some distracting foreground detail.
Well I have half obliged with a mono shot taken a few seconds earlier.
Still with K10D+50-200/PEF and subject again loco no. 44871 en-route from Cleethorpes to Chester via water-stop in Sheffield.
Oh, and I have levelled the shot a little using the bridge as a reference, in case you were thinking yesterday that I had one leg longer than the other!
Renamed since as DT observed, it was not very smoky!

They do look good in black and white Peter. This seems to be more dramatic than the colour version you posted earlier, but I like them both for bringing back happy schoolboy memories of time spent at the lineside.

PS: You complained no one had posted a steam train picture for about 500 posts. I've got hundreds but didn't want to flood the Gallery with them. However I've got one taken within the last two weeks of Tornado. I'll pop it on next.

I think the more "head-on" view enhances the image of power and heightens the drama.
If you ignore the lineside vehicle and the leading Mk2 coach in maroon, I don't think there is too much to give away the date.
I have not spent as much time on the forum recently, perhaps a quick look at the Gallery, so I have not seen anything in the "Your Photos" part of the forum, though I remember your shot of '6201' in Durham.

Again a very nice image Peter and I have to say I think you have done a good job of the conversion here with good tones and definition. I also agree with David about it looking more dramatic in mono, Steam for me lends itself better to this treatment I think.

Having a nice sunny day helped enormously. However the Sun was not lighting up the smokebox at all- it was definitely to the side of the engine, casting my own shadow behind me.
When others enjoy my images it is a pleasure to post Cliff.
