Wide angled lens

You can zoom the sigma in to 12mm to reduce the worst excesses of the distortion. But you can't zoom the 12-24 out to 10mm...

Do you really need want a zoom. If yes the options above are great. an additional option, which maybe is a bit less costly. Another possibilty is the 16-45 F4. Also quite nice and not a bank buster. However it is up to you to decide if 16mm is wide enough. It gains you only 2mm angle, however a lot of difference from 18mm in view angle, and some additional light throughout the zoom range. It also saves you having to carry an additional lens. You can replace the 18-55 with the 16-45!

There are also some nice primes available.
DA 14mm F2.8
DA 15mm F4.0
The rest are indead the wide angle zooms. Like already suggested. They are also quite costly, but don't discount them.

The decision is up to you, hope I helped.

Until you HAVE had and used a decent, really wide-angle, zoom you just can't really appreciate the difference in effect between that and the "wide end" of a kit zoom, or anything only just slightly wide (such as 16mm)- NB, Before I went digital I had, and still have, a Vivitar 19-35mm for use with my MZ-5N film camera - and it was a revelation compared with even the wide end of my 28-200mm Sigma.

10-12mm gives you opportunities that you just don't have with 16-18mmm - especially indoors in large buildings. Yes, you can get some distortion of the image, but the only way you could otherwise emulate the breadth of the image is by taking multiple shots - which may not be possible - with the longer lens and then stiching them together, which may be difficult if the perspective varies from shot to shot as you try to cover different parts of the scene in front/above you.

Yes, also this is all about "horses for courses",but the 8-16/10-20/12-24mm zooms simply can do what the less wide zooms and primes can't - and that is what a lot of us want.

Not really looking for 16mm at the wide end. Im looking for wider. When I buy something new I want it to give me not only better quality. But options for my photography,I dont already have. I was on a photowalk around Manchester at the weekend. And to say I was jealeous of the 10 - 20 users is an understatement. Which has brought me to this point. But I feel at second user, the Pentax 12-24 to be an option, as it opens the door to landscape. which i currently dont do. But may like to have a dabble in the future. So as a novice tog, wanting to try something new £300-£400 max is the budget.

Stuart - bottom line is that whatever you decide on, Sigma 10-20mm or Pentax 12-24mm, if you get a good used one, you won't lose any money if you decide it's not for you. You will easily get a 10-20mm for under £300 and might have to stretch the budget a little for the 12-24mm.

there may be another interesting option available in near future:

have samyang 8mm fish and it is fabulous. and da15ltd, but it is not really that wide, as stated before. not really relevant, as you see i prefer primes.

Yes I realise this. The real question I was asking was :- Is the Sigma 10-20 Hsm worth in excess of £100 more than the EX version. I now know the Ex lens to be a good buy. I was wondering if anyone had experience of the faster Hsm Lens. Though I dont think that for me greater lens speed or silent focusing. Will be a great issue. But wanted to check, in case im wrong.

No experience of the HSM version, but I took over 1000 photos in Italy with it and never once thought it wasn't focusing fast enough. I've not noticed any difference in focusing speed between this lens and any other I have.

Mainly agreed - the only real difference I noticed on holiday between that and my new 18-135WR HSM is the Sigma is undoubtedly noisy by comparison - but it has so little need to focus very far or to hunt, so the period of the noise is minimal.

I don't know if you can find it on the web. BUT the magazine DIGITAL PHOTO did a comparison test on both 10-20 Sigmas when the HSM version first came out and came to the conclusion that the HSM was NOT WORTH the extra money. It did say it was a very good lens but not worth paying the extra.
I love my Siggy 10-20 and it will be with me on holiday next month. Great for internal shots in buildings and inside on cruise ships etc.
CHEERS Vic.

If you contact SRS directly they will usually do it a bit cheaper for a forum member as they save Ebay fees
