Why is nobody selling K-7s?

It's not AF speed that is dramatically quicker between the K-5 and the K-5II, although the Mk2 is a little quicker. The real game-changer is the AF accuracy which blows that on the K-5 mk1 to pieces.

I can always trust my K-5II to nail focus with every AF lens I own, in all lighting conditions. With the Mk1 it misses at least 50% of the time and also hunts quite a bit in the process. When it is on, the shots are great, but too many are wasted. Nigel has already said that he uses his camera for lots of different shooting situations, so AF accuracy is probably quite important.

Wouldn't have made much difference to my party pics as above - all using an 'A' series lens, and most of my landscapes would be on manual focus as well. But I accept higher performance on the 1 AF lens I use would be a plus. But again, not enough to make the upgrade really worthwhile.

I still think there are K7 owners, those looking at the economics as well, who would be better skipping the K5Mk1 - some will want the AF and high ISO capabilities of the MKII if they can justify the expense now - others will be better keeping on extracting the best from the K7s for now until the K5II is 'end of line' - jump to it then at a bargain price, or splash out on the next big thing !

But for me I'd be wanting whatever that is to offer more in ergonomic and handling features, a much wider & fuller upgrade to the K7 - not just IQ improvements.

What, its only the AF then ? Then more of my K7 colleagues will surely be holding out longer then. I'm not sure if there's been any comparisons done on the manual focus performance between the K7 & K5 (No, you're not getting me to do that one ) But the group of K7 owners who are in desperate need of better AF performance right now is probably lower than those looking to better ISO performance?

All the more reason (for the budget-minded) to skip the Mk1 and wait for the MkIIs at discontinued prices - or start saving now!

For me and many others, the AF performance is critically important, especially when the light is poor and this is where the K-5 is at its most unreliable from a focussing point of view.

If this is not important to you and good high ISO performance is the deciding factor, there is no point waiting for a MkII body, you may as well have a Mk1 for a cheaper price.

Yup. As David said, if AF is critical get a MKII, otherwise save money and get a MKI.

If I had a K-7 ( or K20D ) right now I wouldn't be sure waht to do..

I think I'd wait for a few weeks and see what ther next model offers adn then decide if it's worth spending £1k. If not then a K-5I or K-5II depending on price. AF is not "critical" for me, but it's not unimportant either

There will always be a better model out 'real soon'. I was tempted to upgrade when the K-5 came out, and again when the K-5ii appeared. Somehow I never got round to it - I'd rather spend my cash on better lenses. Maybe next time ...

My K-7 is quite useable up to about ISO1600.

So was my K20D

but I've been getting usable images from the K-5 up to ISO12800 and beyond. [ apologies to those who've seen this one a 100 times ]

The value of having such leeway with the ISO is that you can wack up the shutter speed to avoid camera shake on longer focal lengths. Noise is easier to reduce than camera shake.

In this case 220mm @ 1/200s

I hope the sucessor to the K-5 has an even better High ISO performance

There'll always be a better model out eventually, but not always real soon.

We are indeed in the 'real soon' phase though.

I'm shooting with a K-7 right now and while quite happy with it, I've been looking at the K5II alot and also the upcoming models interest.. But, I refuse to spend money on new model every year, the habit with electronics nowadays.. AND, if a new K-3 or something comes out this year, I'll either start saving money for it or buy K5II when it's dirt cheap

This all began with the OP asking why are there so few used K7s up for sale.

The blindingly obvious answer is of course that not many people want to sell theirs! This would be either because its such an excellent camera that they don't need anything 'better', or its still a fairly new item for the individual.

I have really been trying to say all along that, certainly for me, its a mixture of these situations. I think we can now say that actually, the K7 is very versatile ISO wise, and can produce very good images at 1600 -with a bit more effort with noise reduction techniques and reasonably even lighting there's no reason you couldn't get away with even further.

Maybe the K7s out there are doing a good job for their owners. Some people only ever compare on the basis of ISO & AF performance - but there's a lot more thats also important about a camera than those things. The K7 introduced a great deal at its release, and continues to offer those features, the vast majority of which have not been developed on or advanced by the later models in the series.

I am sure there are still many happy satisfied Canon 40d and Nikon D80 users about, its so easy to be sucked into "needing" the latest model which is why you see a fair few 'downgrading' for sale ads on the web.. no point buying a Ferrari to just nip into town once a week.

ISO, af speed/accuracy and fps are important to me as a main camera so a K5II was the obvious choice and was looking at a K7 as a back up but went for the K30 instead.

I would imagine in some situations no camera would outshine the other

I think a K-7 with a grip really looks the business too although I could only afford the 3rd party look-a-like
