John, I hope you are right, but I thought we are still waiting for a full test of the K-3? If you allow me, they are pretty strong statements made after reading a review on AP ..... I was reading the review in AP re the Olympus E-5 replacement and reflecting how it already seems dated and blown out of the water by the K-3. The comparison between the K-3 and a FF camera also shows the K-3 as clearly superior in results.
I have had the opportunity to try the "Olympus E-5 replacement" and it is a quite different camera than the K-3, IMO.
I guess that different cameras suit different requirements, they might be best at something, but not necessarily at everything.

If it is true that the purely IQ difference can now be insignificant, then what needs to be explored and understood is exactly what aspects of each format / megapixel amount would be ideal for which kinds of photographers.
Clearly there have been a number of Pentax users, it seems mostly those who work professionally, who felt they need the larger format - this is despite the fact that there have existed other APS-C 24mp options they could have chosen. Is it the case that the K3 has changed the game and choices in this respect, and that they may not have needed to make that 'jumping ship' choice?

Often in professional scenes the equipment used is to give confidence to clients rather than what's technically upto to the job

Giorgio, I don't think I quite said what you think I said as I was referring to two different things there.
The main thrust of the argument though was that makers leapfrog each other constantly, so changing marque just because something new comes out can be a bit futile, because next month the boot will be on the other foot.

Would many clients understand the difference between a 16 or even 24mp APS-C and a 'FF' model, or are you suggesting thaat they really only appreciate seeing a big camera with one of two names on the front.

Possibly ... but many (most?) clients would have great trouble differentiating between different camera models beyond the level of point-and-squirt

This very true - a bit like trying to get the best energy supplier. FIx and stay put for two years I say in both cases!

So, its possible that what some of those who jumped ship really needed was in fact a bigger looking camera that their clients (who don't understand the technical differences between sensor sizes, photosites and megapixels) would easily identify at a glance as a proper professional grade model, which must have cost a huge amount and therefore they won't mind paying the photographer a high fee.

Of course it's completely irrational in terms of pure technicality or skill of the professional, but capitalism cares little for those kind of things and places profit as the only real loyalty

[quote:3496ace15f="MattyH"]I got a hands on quick preview of a new camera that will be released in the next few weeks that simply blew me away,
I like my K5 for many of the reasons already rehearsed in this thread (and like the sound of the K3), which is just as well since the thought of selling everything Pentax and restarting from scratch fills me with (inertia-induced?) dismay.
Cameras will continue to improve, but it is hard to see that in recent years the improvements in the final images they produce are other than incremental. Useful but incremental. So until the next revolution that upends the digital age (bio-cameras?), I'll likely stick with Pentax ... provided of course they continue to produce good cameras.
This soon to be released camera is not one for the masses, it will be a toy, something to hold and enjoy using on those special moments, Just like my dads LX or my MX-1, I want it not because I need it but because I don't need it, just like a fine Swiss made watch or a piece of art.
Pentax is the best camera maker in the world for ME, Just like Canon is the best camera maker in the world to my friends for THEM, And so on, it what works for you, but like anything in this world emotion rules the heart not the head, and my heart got the better of me this weekend. And for that I am truly sorry.
So the answer to your question is Pentax needs to make a camera that needs to bring a bit of culture and passion and emotion to its range of slr's like it has done with its limited lenses, compacts and mirrorless range and then we will have the complete package.
But the question was not what camera made me question selling my Pentax gear as to why i couldnt bring myself to sell my Pentax gear.
