Magazine?

I've been asked by a friend to recommend a photo magazine, he wants to give his son-in-law a subscription as a gift.

I haven't taken a mag recently, does anyone have any thoughts, either con or pro?

I like Digital Photo, I think it's a good mag for the amateur plenty "hands on" tutorials with the DVD included and some great ideas for projects.

Practical Photography. They are now giving a disc each month with hints and tips. OR If he wants to know more about Photoshop processing then the sister mag. Digital Photo. This one has always given a disc each month but it is mainly on digital processing.

+1 for practical photography

I get them both and have had Digital Photo since it first came out and was called Digital Photo FX and have all of the DVD's that come with it. (174). I dropped Practical Photography for a few years but went back to it about two years ago. Between the two of them there is a lot of information. As I said above they are different in content but as they are sister magazines they do sometimes have the same things. eg. P.O.T.Y competition.

Walk in to any large news agents and you see a vast array of magazines relating to photography with many of them filled with adds.

Anyway, I personally think Photo Technique strikes a very good balance and is worth the money.

I used to read 'Practical Photography' but it was too biased towards canon and nikon, never any tests on Pentax cameras and lens tests were always negative about anything Pentax.
It also became very repetitive...same old articles.

'Digital Photo' on the other hand was crammed full of useful info.

If one is interested in landscape photography, 'Outdoor Photography' I find extremely good.

@ michaelblue. That was why I cancelled my subscription to PP. Will look for 'Outdoor Photography'

Photo Technique try WH Smiths you can also download it to an iPad if you have one.

Photo Technique magazine focuses on how to rather than talking about books, competitions and photo exhibits. I have only read two copies, but I thought they were very good.

Another one for Outdoor Photography. Not over obsessed with gear, and also tests non- photo things like outdoor gear etc
