Variable ND filters?

I presume these are crossed polarisers, which will go from quite dark to very dark depending on the rotation position.

Hi, I have just bought a Pentax 28mm f2.8 Soft focus lens.
It works well.
Sometimes however when I like to use it at F2.8 tom get the full effect, I run out of fast shutter speeds, or my flash is to strong.
I want to use a ND filter.
Has anybody used the Variable ND filters?
If so, can you give me some idea of the cons or pros of them.

Hi Ken, it is reasonable rare.
I bought it to do some interior pictures of rooms with furniture.
Ir looks a lot better than the normal clinical sharp look.
I tried to use filters, but they are not variable. I found this lens does a very good job.
It cost me 490 Australian Dollars on Ebay. It came from Japan and like all the Ebay lenses from Japan are in first class condition.
The same goes for second hand cameras. I bought a K10 for my grand daughter. It was like mint for 190 dollars.
It has varying softness fro f 2.8 to about f8 and after that it is sharp.

I really like most of the images.
Here is a picture taken with a SUMO lens. This is a 20 Dollar lens, about 150mm f4 or so. I think it has only one meniscus or a doublet lens.

They were both by the same designer anyway (Hirakawa).
He did file a patent in the 90's for another soft focus
lens, but it never reached production.
It looks to me like the soft design of the 28mm was
achieved by replacing the aspherical element in the
FA 28mm f2.8 AL with a more conventional one.

They are known for giving a darker X when used with wide angle lenses (possibly only outside?) which is the only con I've heard about consistently.
How far do you need to reduce your exposures? Rather than a variable ND a ND4, ND8 or perhaps just a CPL might be enough. When using flash you can easily reduce the flash power by adding a diffuser in front of the flash Plain tissue or cigarette papers work well & can be stacked if required for greater effect.
