Can someone please tell me what is the easiest software to use for a beginner. I have Silkypix and someone told me about Gimp but I have never edited a RAW file in my life. I am not keen on heavily edited "photoshopped" images but would prefer just to learn basic RAW file editing and perhaps how to make cloud formations look a bit more dramatic, just fairly basic changes really. Any thoughts???

I think the best choice would be Photoshop Elements, I would forget all about RAW and I know a furious argument will ensue, at the end of the day you will have to end up with a JPEG anyway. Someone recently said to me that RAW was for photographers who don't know what they are doing

The most important thing is to get your exposure right in camera and you will save yourself a huge amount of time in front of the computer screen

Thanks (fellow "jock", I'm a Cowdenbeath man). I think that as I'm a REAL newbie to photo editing, apart from on a smartphone,I'd be wise to take your advice. I just thought that everyone automatically shot RAW and cleaned the files later. Obviously wrong again...

If you use Lightroom, there is no more effort shooting RAW as there is shooting JPEG

That's not something I would brag about

Have a wee laugh here

For me, LR and Elements would be the ideal starting point and use Adobe TV and YouTube for your learning materials.
Cheers

Lightroom can be left until later as Elements I am sure comes with Camera Raw. Camera Raw given with Elements is not as sophisticated as Lightrooom but is a very good starting point if you are new to RAW. JPEGs can also be processed by it, if more sophisticated processing oof them is required. "Open File", choose file, change format to "RAW" from the "FORMAT" Drop Down Menu at the bottom of the Screen and then click on "OPEN". Suggest using DNG for your Raw files when you are ready for them as PEF is not always processable by 3rd party editing tools.
