The Blair Witch Project - don`t tell me that was a good film !!

Battlefield Earth was my first one to come to mind, what a skocker John Travolta only did that film because of his scientology beliefs and as a favour to the book author L Ron Hubbard who was the founder of Scientology, I bet he is still regreting it.

Absoutely. The only remake that betters the original IMHO is The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. But the prequel (forget what they called it -- it was on TV a few months ago) was way too gory, even for this franchise.

I was having a think last night about my top films and the list just goes on and on. They've made more good movies over the years than you would think. Local Hero and Whisky Galore came to mind, among dozens of others. And most films by the Coen brothers (or Cohen brothers, as I was going to call them).

Hah yes I bet he is. The stupid thing is that the book is actually not all that bad. It requires some serious suspension of disbelief as the caveman star manages to become a self-taught jet fighter pilot by the end of the story! Having said that it's certainly no worse (nor more unbelievable) than some classic sci fi by well-known space opera writers like E E Doc Smith.

I actually enjoyed the book very much, all 1200 pages of it the movie was a serious let down

Come on thoughton - surely the whole idea of fiction of any kind is to suspend belief ??
Without that there is no fiction - Smith,Wells,Verne,Heinlein,Asimov,Clarke.
I agree the book was - ok - but the film was pretty pants - even Starship Troopers was better than that ( Paul Verhoeven from a Bob Heinlein story )

Starship Troopers is probably my favorite book ever. I must have read it hundreds of times as a teenager. The movie was awful! I think I've read everything Heinlein wrote. I much prefer the later stuff from the 70s and 80s.

Like it or loath it, at least the Blair Witch Project was interesting from a concept/cinematography point of view.

For me the worst films are the inexcusibly bland ones.

Yes and no, I was thinking very hard if I should include it in my list or not, it's quite an unique film and it told you an story in another way.
Some people will never understand or get into the film but if you sit home alone at midnight watching this film so that you can go completely into it then yes it does have an strange impact on you. It's certainly not a film you should watch in the cinema and if you aren't in the film after 15 minutes then you can turn it off since it then isn't a film for you.

btw I forgot to name some Ghibli movies.
Grave of the Fireflies (the only film I cried with in the last 5 years and it was even animated :blush
My Neighbor Totoro (almost nothing special happens here but the atmosphere is perfect)

Of course I could also name some Disney classics only they had quite a dip after Tarzan and only recently they are back again.

I'm also a little bit of an anime fan. Back in Hong Kong we used to get cinema releases of most of the big anime movies. I also cried at Grave of the Fireflies and I saw Totoro (again) only a few months ago. Both are fabulous movies (for adults! Don't take your kids!) which can compare favourably to any live action Hollywood drama.

I can't believe you're putting Battle Royale up as a worst movie.

It's a fantastic movie, and certainly one of my favourite sub-titled movies ever.

I much prefer the later stuff from the 70s and 80s.[/quote]Now we are on the same wavelength - Heinlein was my great hero too - I`ve read and re-read many times over the last 50 years - Stranger in a Strange Land has to be the GREATEST - only a couple were a bit off key.

There you go you see !!!! Emperors new clothes syndrome - it`s odd,quirky,badly shot,poorly scripted - it MUST be good art !! Bit like all that pretentious cr*p we are foisted with in the art galleries and award ceremonies.
