Personally, I don't care what anyone uses to make great images
I've used Canon & Nikon gear, and have my own opinions of them (which aren't relevant in this thread). I also have my own reasons for using Pentax (again, which don't need to be stated).
However, when it comes to threads in this forum the title gives a big clue as to the primary, and almost singular purpose
If you want to talk general pros & cons of brands then the ephotozine forums are a much, much better place to post for that kind of discussion (they have a much bigger moderator team as well!)
It's probably worth pointing out that the moderators get nothing from moderating this forum, and that the intention is to keep this a Pentax User forum
As mentioned, ePhotozine forums are a fine "brand-insensitive" place to hang out if you want

Bans, whether temporary or permanent, are a last resort. Discussion is the best option, and usually resolves most issues once tempers have cooled.
Moderation is fair and even-handed and is applied to all, even if it may not always look that way to you Gareth. There are rules that apply to conduct in the forum, and the moderator team try to make sure they are adhered to. Most users self-moderate, some need a gentle nudge in the right direction.
If you genuinely think that the moderator team are abusing their power, then you are of course free to make a complaint to Peter Bargh, the owner of this site, who will, I'm sure, wish to see that his forum is being conducted to his satisfaction. I would advise the use of PM for this, if this is the course you wish to take.
I'm off out now, to take some photos.

I will endorse absolutely what the other mods have said. There's no need for all this grumbling, we're as tolerant here as it's possible to be, in the face of some very offensive posts.
There are other forums on the web where the trigger point is much lower...
And as just said, if you want to exchange Canon, Nikon and other marques chatter then there are plenty of places to do that. We don't expect to go there and discuss Pentax!

I agree entirely , sense of humour is really something that abounds here in this forum and it makes a jolly great place , and friendly also.Have you ever read a Canon forum?

That said, this isn't the first time I've read about you being involved in such a problem. Sooner or later we may come to the conclusion that there is one constant variable in all these cases.
You.

Your ignorance of the facts (and self-confessed lack of imagination) haven't stopped you from rushing in and passing judgement in a situation where angels would fear to tread.
If you are still here in a few years time you may be able to make a more informed assessment of things.
And taking up one of OI's comments, I suspect I am not alone in feeling that the select few who are currently lowering the tone of the forum are those whingeing about the moderators.
And one of them is:
You.

Crikey Carl, look at the major drama your post has caused!
The whys and whats etc are reactions that tend to follow up. You just have to briefly glance over threads like that and notice the number of pages it then keeps running, until of course the moderators decide to step in.
But I must say though that mostly they are kept within civilized verbal tones, with exceptions of some odd comments here and there, but otherwise all within the limits of decent expressive comments.
I agree also that the topic is highly explosive so perhaps its time to have a "Explosive topic" section in this forum for these type of threads
