The Optio I-10

Videos are in M-JPEG, which means they are sequences of JPEG images without any motion compression like in MPEG.
The easiest editor you can find seems to be obviously Womble MPEG Video Wizard DVD. It is very easy, fast efficient, rather expensive ($100), but with one month for trial without limitations, and will bring you very good compatible MPEGs that keep the image ratio.
Yesterday, I tried an H.264 conversion of a 4.30 mn 800 Mb AVI M-JPEG (several clips shot in low light conditions already concatenated with another software) with the free Open Source StaxRip. The conversion was very slow, but I got an excellent 500 Mb MKV file (with even some noise reduction), that displays perfectly on my LG player.

I have a black/chrome I-10 (as does another friend) and we are both having problems with images being badly over-exposed.

This seems to be erratic as some images are fine and then others not. It seems to get worse the longer the camera is left switched on - but that's a perception and havn't done controlled tests.

I am a fairly experienced photographer, always used Pentax (K1000, MX, ME, iST) but never come across something as erratic as this.

I have tried doing a Reset and looked at all other settings but getting to the point now where I don't trust the camera to get what I want.

Anybody have any suggestions?

Many thanks,

John

I have the same black/chrome I-10, but I did not notice this issue (yet). But I never kept it switched on for a long time. I noticed color balance issues as soon as the light is not quite a standard one, I complained about the camera being unable to select a long exposure in auto mode (could it be solved by a firmware upgrade?), but this gives underexposed pictures.
Does it happen in all modes? Did you try all AE settings? I supposed so, as you are an experienced photographer.

It seems the Pentax Photo Gallery doesn't accept submissions from Option users, as their email reply states:

"Hi,

We don't currently accept Optios into the Gallery. It is built for DSLR
cameras.

Best,
PPG"

Shame, as these compacts can produce decent results

Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

With brilliant lighting, if you don't use the full zoom and you are a good photographer, they can produce decent results.
And if they can't, why do they sell them? I was thinking of purchasing a Pentax DSLR when my Sony Alpha gets old, because they seemed even more compatible than the Sony with ancient M42 lens, but the poor average quality of the results I get with the I-10 did not really encourage me (and also the idea of all my old Minolta AF gear becoming useless).
As I am a longtime adept of the "make good images with a less than $100 camera" challenge, I submitted some of my images to the challenges here. They were not rejected, though I didn't win

Well... Pentax compacts perform well enough for their price point, but to me the image quality ranges from poor to average. This is not unique to Pentax though, most of the competition is pretty ropey too. It is a shame if people think this has any bearing on DSLR image quality, it certainly doesn't.

I'm glad about the merger with Ricoh as they major on image quality, innovation, and manual control with their compacts - exactly what is currently lacking from Pentax's range.

I was recently looking for a small compact to carry with me all the time. Despite some critical comments especially about noise over 200iso, I saw an I-10 in my local ASDA store for just £42 and decided to buy it.
I am very pleased so far, although I have not used it at higher iso values. For the price, it has got to be good value!
Anyone looking for one, try your local ASDA - the Gravesend store had 3 left in stock (they are not available on the ASDA website).

You can't really complain at 42 quid

With good light, should be more than ok for snaps.

I've done well in competitions with the I-10, never mind just for snaps! However, it is much more difficult to get quality images out of such a small camera.

Camera shake is the real enemy.

I have both the ivory white I-10 (which I bought at full price when it was released) and the classic black version (bought more recently when the price dropped.

Both cameras are capable of producing decent quality results and I happily keep one with me as an everday carry.

Over the years I've shot everything from Minox 8x11 to 10x8 so I count myself as reasonably experienced to make a judgement.
