Am I odd in that I actually don't want people in my photos?
Nope, sounds right to me. But then, I am misanthropic.
Not only do I not like people in my shots, I really don't like taking shots of people.
Getting there! Thanks to you guys

Same here. I never have a clue how to photograph groups of people and really don't like asking everyone to stand around, budge in a bit, etc. The scenery doesn't mind if I spend ages fiddling around, then decide I'd like to try it with a polariser, or swap lenses because that rock looks as though it'd be interesting if isolated and it's in the middle of a river so I can't walk closer to it...

If I'm wandering around at a club event and asked to get a few shots for the website I'll take general views of the base camp area and also anyone doing something daft (such as ending up on their backside in the mud during a recovery). I'm always more interested in atmosphere than formal compositions.

I love people (and vehicles ) in the shots. My shooting buddy is always moaning about cars being in the way of a good shot while we're doing walkabout in the street snapping away.

I then remind him of all those lovely old photos taken 80 or 90 years ago and ask if he would like all those Model-T fords out of the way and he always replies 'Fair point'

regarding people I will always wait until someone appears in frame before taking a shot. In fact I make a point of snapping candids of people. IMO it's all of life of the scene I'm capturing.

People can give a sense of scale to a shot, so sometimes I am happy to have someone in a bright orange cagoule in the picture. Sometimes not.

Thought I would 'bump' this with some outcome.

Remember I raised it at the Local Community Council and really got nowhere , the Councillors present thought that this was a 'sensible' action bearing in mind the problems nowadays.

The following week someone else also sent a letter to the Local newspaper stating that they thought the whole situation was ridiculous .

Today's paper has a piece about it saying that the Council has backed down - and he now can take his photos. On reading it even the gentleman concerned is unhappy at this outcome.

Quote:
Although South Lanarkshire have relented in allowing him to take pictures in the parks,he has been told to give dates when he wishes to do so , something Mr S...... is not too happy about.

He said " It's not on , there's no way that I, or anyone else living in a liberal democracy , would accept that kind of overbearing authority. We pay for our parks , it comes out of our council tax and it goes against the whole principal of a democracy.
South Lanarkshire do seem to have responded to him and/ or the Local Newspaper claiming that they have a right to regulate park use as they wish.

They said

We have made it clear to Mr S........... that he can take photographs of wild flowers, plants trees fungi , wild animals in the parks ,scenery including statues, buildings or other items of interest and had he made it clear to us just what he wanted to photograph in the first place , this permission would have been given then. The council, as park owners, has the right to regulate park use. Section 112 of the Civic Government ( Scotland) Act 1982 give the Council the authority to make rules known as management rules to allow it to govern its parks
So that's OK then - he can tell them that on such and such a day he wants to go and take piccies of the lions in the parks [ they are wild animals after all ] If however it's belting with rain and so he can't go , and the next day is nice and sunny but as he hasn't got specific permission to go shooting that day , he has to stay home. BTW - if he's in the park and there are dogs running around - not attached to humans [ and they are meant to be on a lead in the parks ] can he photograph them - are they domesticated or wild ?

It still remains , as I understand it , that I can't decide to go and take photos for my College Homework in the 2 local parks unless I beg for permission beforehand [ and if I explain that I'm looking for pictures showing motion can you see them understanding that I can't actually say exactly what I will be shooting ? ]

I leave that to your imagination

This is the Council that drew up rules for cemeteries that effectively said you couldn't have a horse drawn hearse - animal were not allowed in cemeteries .

They also said that the gates to the Cemetery were to be locked at 5pm but never said when they were to be opened

Surely it would be worse if someone went into a park and attacked a child rather that took a photo? I've never yet heard of a council banning adults from going into a park which would be safer than just banning adults with cameras. Is it that they don't want to look silly?

What about adults with dogs? I would assume pedos have dogs and even if the owner isn't a pedo the dog could be dangerous..... but still not banned.... only if they have a camera.

Unlikely, he would have been at a Burns Supper the night before.

I had a lot of fun taking pictures in the park at our work's picnic. In fact not only did we take pictures, we *consumed alcohol* in blatant disregard of the signs put up by the council!

Our company designed the new water-play feature, new war memorial, and general park improvements.

Unbelievable. These Borgs really are sucked into this media driven scare culture which is based upon a foundation of nothing.

I hope Mr S...... does the right thing and lets this council go **** themselves and just go and take his pics. I would.
