Step by step instructions for posting using Flickr

This comes up fairly often and so I thought I would post this here. Perhaps a mod might like to make it a "sticky" : K.

Assuming you have already uploaded the photo to flickr:

1. Go to the photo page in Flickr (the one with the comments box etc)
2. Click on the all sizes button. The image will come up full size.
3. Choose which size image you want to post (or just stick with the full size one if you want). A size about 1000 pixels across works OK.
4. Scroll down to the bottom of the page to the box called "Grab the photo's URL" and copy the address given in that box.
5. Come back here. Click on the Image button
6. Paste the URL between the two image tags which will have appeared in your text, i.e., between the left and right facing square brackets.
7. The image will be included in your post when you click the "Add comment" or "Add topic" button.

Please make the image no more than 800 pixels wide.

The option of 800 wide isnt available in the Flickr settings John, but if you use the 1000 setting this site auto resizes it to 800 fine, i've been doing as kris describes above for months and it works a treat. The next option down on Flickr is a bit small to see detail IMHO.

Why not just upload an image 800 pixels wide to Flikr, or, indeed, use Photobucket which does the job seemingly with fewer problems?

I always resize my photos to 800 pixels to upload to Photobucket. They upload quicker that way, and are less likely to be "borrowed".

I, and probably others, upload full size to Flickr in order to have a 3rd full-size and off-site backup of my photos.

I don't use Photobucket because they used to delete photos that haven't been viewed in a certain period of time. Not sure if they still do this, but I think so.

Nothing has disappeared from my album - I have a space allocation and that's it.

I have never had things deleted from Photobucket, and it really doesn't get that many viewings. I'm quite happy with it for posting photos on forums and the like. If I want to share more photos, with better quality I use our own website.

I upload photos to flickr at the resolution I want them to be on here. I'd rather not rely on website software to do the resizing. If I want to have a full size image on flickr (not often I do that) and here I upload two versions. Like Gwyn, I prefer not to have full size images online where they can be 'borrowed' without my permission/knowledge.

I use Microsoft Picture Manager to resize to 1042pixels wide before uploading to Flickr - I think MS call it 'document large image' size, I hope I can use these here?

1042 pixels is too wide and it distorts the forum so we have to scroll from side to side.

800 pixels wide is perfect.

Photobucket is free.....and it works!

If I am not mistaking the forum now resizes the pictures automaticly.
Look at the FC Competition for examples. Only if clicked on they will show in full rez. Otherwise they will not be bigger than the 800 px wide.There has been some discussion about it and resulted in lifting the 800 px rule for the Fortnightly.

The forum is designed for 800 pixels wide, that's all I can tell you. Sometimes when people post wider the whole thing goes awry and we need to scroll. I haven't analysed under what circumstances this happens.

It may be that some sections are not set up in the same way, but we do see it quite often.

I would merely suggest that as people seem to have troubles with Flikr and as Photobucket is free there is an easy option there. It's best to upload an 800 pixel image and not let Photobucket do it for you. It will be quicker and you will retain control of your image. Sometimes images look soft and it may be that the resizing causes this.

I most of the time click now on the photos here that way you see the full version not the version the forum as make into 800px.
At least that's how I do it if I want to have a closer look.
Also when I ask for advice I upload a bigger version so that it's easier for people to edit.

Relying on the forum software to resize your pictures can also result in aliasing which gives straight lines a staircase effect.
