Silkypix problem

Aha, thanks, no wonder I've never used it before!
Edit - hang on, I think the K-30 only saves raw as .DNG so why would it be supplied with something called Silkypix for Pentax if it didn't support the file format?

DNG is supposed to be a universal RAW format, so it should open OK. Is version 3.0 recent enough to support DNG? Does it need updating?

Problem solved. I had installed v3.0.01 which came with the Q. I uninstalled this and installed v3.0.05 which came with the K-30. All is OK. Seems odd though, maybe just a duff copy I got with the Q, didn't think they were camera specific.
Thanks anyway, John.

It is almost certainly locked to only open files coming from certain cameras, so yes, you can say they are very much camera specific. I would probably buy a Q or K01 if it wasn't for this fact. I got Silkypix with my Gx10 and Samsung was even kind enough to offer free updates of the program along the way. Once (if ) you get used to it, it is a very good program.

The whole point of DNG is that it's an open format, so something seems amiss here.
I can open RAW files from the Q in Photoshop without any problem.

....but what's the point of offering software that can't open the files from the camera? Very odd.

Michael

There isn't any Michael, so there must be an error of some sort. I don't suppose for a second that it was intentional.
Why not give Pentax or JPS a call and see what their technical people say?

Yes - it looks like a software fault here we have discovered. All my .DNG files open with Photoshop but even with this later version not all .DNG files are opening.

I assume you are using the free software that came with the camera. Is it called Silkypix, or is it just made by them?
At one time, this was very much a stripped down version of the real Silkypix, and I would expect that it still is. Why give away something that you normally charge for?
I have used proper Silkypix for a long time, and think it's wonderful. Well worth paying for.

Yes, we are talking about the free version. The other way of looking at it though is it hardly inspires me to upgrade if the "demo" version doesn't work for the camera it has been supplied with.

I have Silkypix Developer Studio 3.0 Free Edition (v 3.0.22.2) and this version displays the thumbnail views of *.DNG files but if I select single image display, the main image window goes blank (note that this is with K10 & K5 raw images).
The solution I used was to download Adobe DNG converter (v6.3.0.79 running currently) and by "converting" the original *.DNG to *.DNG, it makes the images viewable/editable.
See the Adobe website at:
http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=106&platform=Windows
Other forum users in the past have noted that a useful by-product of this "conversion" process is to reduce the file-size of the reulting *.dng file.
I have used the DNG converter to convert K10 PEFs to DNG as well.

It seems to me, from what is being said, that Pentax are guilty of producing a non-standard DNG.

When I try and open a .DNG file it comes up with "Cannot read unsupported camera file" which was a bit of a shock! Raw files are in the drop down choices and it opened a .jpg ok. Any ideas?
