Right, the Metz 48 - despite being a fantastic flash - just isn't working out for me in the situations I'm using it in; I'm not a fan of the way its tilt lock works, which is a pain when you're constantly going from portrait to landscape on the fly in a busy, physically active environment, and it's AF assist beam - while fine at longer distances - is too high up for centre-spot AF at the distances I usually work at in clubs due to the effects of parallax.

With that in mind, I think it's probably time to upgrade to the AF540FGZ; how much do they usually go for, and does anyone have one available?

I'd also be willing to do a swap + cash to you for my Metz 48 (with genuine Sto-Fen and Chinese knock-off Lightsphere) if anyone was interested in going the other way. The Metz really is a fantastic flash; far better than the AF360FGZ, and I'll probably end up missing some of it's features, but it's just not suited to the work I'm doing at the moment

So anyone got a spare AF540FGZ they fancy getting rid of?

There is also a Samsung version of this which is identical which you may also look out for - not sure of its model number. Quite rare I would have thought though. This is a flash my brother has and he got it for a bargain 170 or so on Ebay.

It's the SEF-54PZF - I have two.

Identical to the AF540FGZ apart from the badge - and the manual, which is a cut-down and much less useful version of the Pentax one.

Don't suppose you're looking to get rid of one of them Chris?

I'm afraid not. With the price of the Pentax 540 as it is, I'd need a lottery win to give up either of them.

I quite often use them both together, as it happens if I'm taking pictures at parties or similar. I stick them on their stands, pointing up (if the ceiling is a suitable colour and not too high), on either side of the room, and then fire them wirelessly as slaves.

Haha I don't blame you to be honest! Seems like getting hold of a decent P-TTL flash these days isn't easy, not at a reasonable price anyway.

Saying that, it could be worse; I could be trying to get hold of a Samsung NX flash as well... oh wait, I am lmao.

Anyway, I've widened my search to the Sigma EF 610 Super and any of the better Metz models (50 or 5. Anyone got one available?

Forget these namby-pamby modern gadgets and get a proper flash. The AF400-T has reliable auto-exposure, ample power, and by God it looks the part.

With this flash and a black leather jacket you'll have people calling you Bailey and offering to pose naked.

Guaranteed!

I would use that (not with my K-x but with my NX11) except for the fact that at ISO800 f2.8 (necessary for balancing ambient light with softly backlit subject) it'd overexpose MASSIVELY on whatever setting I used.

Old-school flashes tend to take the viewpoint of "you WILL use this aperture or I'm going to blow your highlights, and maybe your midtones if you get snippy with me."

Plus drunk girls in clubs already offer to pose naked

I am not sure you are correct.

On manual at 1/25 power at ASA 800 (OK, ISO nowadays) and an aperture of f2.8, you would be OK at a distance of 8 metres.

Or bounce it off the ceiling, and it would be OK at around 4 metres (depending on ceiling).

Alternatively, put it on full auto at ISO 800.

But thank you for your other information. Perhaps I should join a few clubs.

I presume that is a V for Victory sign, and not a response to an improper request.

You know, leaving the obvious appeal, that is a rather good picture.

There is a lot of attitude (I mean body language) in that pose, and one is left wondering what the story is.

At least, that's my excuse for coming back and having another look.
