K1 also has inbuilt astrotracer
The K1 can be taken anywhere regardless of climate. With Wr lens.
Sony are a gigantic company as are Panasonic , so what, Pentax are still producing decent cameras.
If small companies like olympus and fuji can make csc then i think cannon and nikon and pentax certainly can.
The dslr companies may be playing the waiting game.

I think no matter what innovations each company may evoke in their cameras Sony is prepared to spend to market their products in a far more serious way. Creating a greater awareness and bigger market share. That has placed them way above Ricoh.

While Ricoh have a fabulous product in the K1 variants With some nice ideas. Have they really done enough to bring it to a wider market..

Ive not looked at the Sony offering. But its my guess is that it has fast auto focus and takes a decent video.. Two faults Pentax Ricoh have not tackled since they came to the digital market..

Agreed. Pentax autofocus tracking is virtually non existent, they might as well not bother. I can not understand why they don't address this problem when practically every other camera company has it sorted

I wouldn't say Pentax Autofocus tracking is non existent, I agree its not as good as Canikon, but decent shots can be had with experience, Back Button Focussing ( BBF ) does help with the keeper rate.

I shoot a fair few jets on the Mach Loop and when the target is small, light grey and coming straight at you at 500mph+ your keeper rate is probable 1, as they get closer and turn to give a better target, the keeper rate also goes up.

You will still hear Canikon users shooting continuously for the 5 seconds the jet is in view giving them 80 to 100 shots of each pass, I in the meantime will selectively do probably 2 or 3 short bursts prob with 10 - 15 shots of a passing jet.

K1 - Sigma 100 - 300 F4 @ 150mm - F7.1 - ISO 800

Sometimes things do become "received wisdom" whereas they actually change all the time. I've used Pentax lenses that were stunningly fast to focus and Nikon and Canon ones that were funereal in their pace, but also the other way round as well.

There is also a cost factor and some lenses are so expensive the finances just might creak a bit. The fastest camera body I've ever used costs £4500, plus a suitable lens at £2500 and I can't even think of affording that even if I wanted to.

The K-1 plus 150-450mm suits me just fine and is plenty fast enough for wildlife. I'll just keep practicing.

It must be a relief to only have a maximum of 22 shots to sort through from a similar 5 second burst (or 17 if you are shooting RAW)?

Defiantly yes, plus it makes the keeper selection easier, who wants 50 shots of a jet where its moved 50 feet on each one at the same angle / trajectory

For me, selective bursts of 3 to 5 RAWS and track the jet with BBF whilst its in sight

Pentax AF is much better than Sony's. It's the photographers that who are incompetent and only any good at moaning and spreading FUD

The aim of this topic is all about discussing the relative rate of innovation & time to market between Pentax & Sony, or any other camera manufacturer for that matter. It’s not about down playing The K1’s capabilities, rather the comparison between it and the a7iii highlights the rate at which the two companies innovate & bring new products to market.

Pentax is on it’s 3rd iteration of pixel shift, Sony is on its first, where do you think their pixel shift capability will be by the time they have their 3rd iteration ?

I think you will find I stated that the K1 was a fabulous offering... !! My point was they need to grow their market share.

Pentax got it basically right on their first iteration and has fluffed around the edges since then. That's the difference between a company like Pentax, which understands cameras and their users, and a tech company like Sony.

But Sony are listening to their users, and generally speaking the A7iii has caught up to / exceeded the DSLR competion this time. I doubt the controls are as photographically intuitive as a Pentax or Nikon camera yet, but I think they're getting there.

Reading this thread I'm reminded of the philosophy of the British Cycling team under Sir Dave Brailsford....they were not striving for major improvements but for the incremental changes that were easy to achieve and yet still achieve the positive results that they did
