I don't disagree with what you are saying Alan, only in the sense that as it would need a redesigned body it's a less likely approach.

However, we know Pentax are not shy of doing something radically different, so who knows, you may get what you want one day.

Disagree John. Using the long side dimension for a square sensor would give us everything we have now in terms of image quality in landscape mode. It would improve quality for portrait mode. It would increase the height of the camera but do away with the need for a grip. Many now say they need the grip as the camera is too small

Agreed!

I don't imagine there's that much demand for a square sensor but I think it would be great. The main advantage (for me) being the ability to have a button to flip between landscape and portrait modes without having to rotate the camera. I have had a go at using a grip but it doesn't make it any less awkward in my opinion. (Almost) all the controls just become less accessible.

It's great to see that Pentax/Ricoh hasen't forgotten us and gontinue making "traditional" DSLR cameras. I'll hope that there are DSLR cameras on two gategories like K-x/K-r and k-7/K-5.

A square sensor would produce an image suitable for a 10 x 8 print with very little cropping needed, it would be very close to the same shot taken full frame that would have needed the sides cropping.

Until Monday all we really know is that the K30 is likely to be a fair bit better (both in terms of IQ and ergonomics) than the K-r but not quite as good as the K5...

For those seeking to upgrade from K-x (or older) but not quite having the finances for the K5 it's a pretty good move on Pentax's part...

I'm interested...

A leaked quote from Pentax on the other forum suggests quite a significant AF improvement.

Quote:
The K-30 features the state-of-the-art SAFOX IXi+ AF sensor module, which assures responsive, high-precision autofocus operation by incorporating a diffraction lens to minimize chromatic aberration in accordance to the characteristics of each individual lens. It also factors the light source at the time of shooting into its calculations. Nine of its 11 sensor points have cross-type sensors to capture all kinds of subjects in sharp focus, while its spotbeam projector assists the AF system at poorly lit locations. The K-30’s AF algorithm has also been upgraded in all areas. A new select-area expansion function allows the sensor module to continue to track a moving subject, even when it moves out of a pre-assigned auto-tracking area, by assessing distance data collected by neighboring focus sensors. The accuracy and speed of detecting moving subjects during autofocus shooting, and autofocusing performance when using a telephoto lens, have been greatly improved as well.

The other forum also suggests the full specs will be released tonight.

I want two...!!!! It looks good and it has the one main feature that I would sorely miss on lower end model, ie the front wheel. I guess it might not have a pentaprism and not all the direct access buttons but I'd take the hit on those for size and weight savings. Especially as a second/take everywhere camera that the K-01 does not seem to manage to be for me (yeap had another go while in Greece on a sunny day... it was a total no-go )

Just hope they stick with the 16MP flavoured sensors, not quite persuaded by the new 24MP sony varieties just yet. Too many pixels for what I need with somewhat compromised DR and high ISO performance.

K-30 seems to be for heavy-duty use. I like that.

It's looking really really good. 100% pentaprism, focus peaking in liveview, really small weathersealed body... If these specs (seen on the other forum, and apparently official) turn out to be correct, I will probably end up buying this over the K5
