I've got to admit Don, if anyone can sell them has to be you . And think you got till the end of March to find even more reasons as to why anyone should buy them!

BTW I am still gonna have a play with one on the 17th...

But the key question remains whether the average punter will find it equally attractive next to more petite models like the PEN or NEX ranges.

The market - and maybe the Sunday broadsheet supplements - will decide!
I only live here - but I agree that just because a bunch of not-especially-interested-in-photography people like it doesn't mean it's a certain hit.
Did you tell them it only looks like that cause it has no zoom?

I believe the people that you describe are the people that will first ask how much it can zoom.
It was one of the photoshopped ones - with the 31ltd not the new 40mm - and we went on from there. I know a 31ltd isn't a zoom, but they didn't and it's not that small. They seemed OK when we (me+the other two) said that better image quality = bigger camera (than a P&S) and nothing you can really do about it. They just don't want a DSLR - remember the Kevin Spacey PEN adverts?

I think a lot will be down to Pentax Ricoh and their marketing. They really have to make an effort with this one. It is more than a P&S but I don't think it will attract DSLR shooters. I wouldn't buy one instead of my K-5 (or even my Ds if it still worked).
It has to be aimed at the right audience and that can only happen by spending money on promoting it, not just relying on existing Pentax users to buy it, simply because it is Pentax and new.

But which is the right audience? Spending £600-odd on a camera suggests a more than casual interest in photography. Yet I'm hard put to imagine anyone with that level of interest being prepared to accept the limitations (in some circumstances) of having only a screen to use in composing shots. Even on the P&S camera I occasionally use, with an *articulated* screen, the viewfinder is sometimes indispensable.

I like the look and promise of the K-01 well enough. I hope I'm wrong to wonder whether the lack of viewfinder isn't its Achilles' heel.

link to dxo scores of k-01 competitors compare aNY of those camera to the k-5...then consider this.. I earlier posted a link to a site that compares size to different camera models, and the k-01 and newest canon were about the same dimensions.... the k-01 will blow evry othe evil cam away in a side by side image quality shoot out..the magazines will have to report this... Pentax will get press!

Maybe so Mike but I think the conclusion will always be- it takes great pics but you might as well buy a DSLR. It wont win any group tests purely because of its size. That's before you take into account the possible anti Pentax press postion

I can understand the lack of EVF, but surely would have made sense to include a hinged screen.

Missed opportunities, I bet if it was kn house designed, Pentax would have done better job.

Having said that, I like the fact you can stand it on the sides and it looks nice in white (but I like white - ordered my new car in white)
K5iis and a couple of lenses.

Well, whatever the case maybe, it sure is just a start of things to come.

The thing that manufacturers don't understand about viewfinders is that they have dioptre adjustment. There are 20 million people over 50 in the UK and they hold 80% of the wealth. The majority of these wear reading glasses like me. This means you have to put on glasses every time you want to take a photo with an LCD screen whereas the viewfinder can be dioptre corrected to negate this. So in my opinion this makes the camera an unlikely purchase for a massive number of people.

Absolutely right, I really like the specification and design of the K-01, specially in yellow, but it is of no use to me without a viewfinder. The LCD screen requires too much faffing about with glasses. Such a pity, it IS a lovely modern camera, a future design classic, and I am sure will offer excellent image quality.

I think it was Don that shot down my get-rich-quick business idea by telling me this solves that issue : link

I have to say that the lack of a viewfinder maybe a problem for some but it isnt the problem with this camera IMO,

Many CSCs don't have viewfinders and they sell in droves.

I like a viewfinder because I'm used to it and understand why people like it and I want one. But This is the first CSC from Pentax and has been set up as an entry level model (it will be under £550 in 6 months I bet), lets wait and see if they bring out another model with a viewfinder down the line.

The camera is going to take brilliant pictures- better than all cameras at this price point quite possibly.

The problem with it is the perceived size, looks and the way it is marketed.

If Pentax can get the latter one right they still could have a hit- I think it will sell better than the Q (a camera that is small and looks good but doesn't excel at taking pictures)

BTW I seriously doubt that this camera is aimed at the oldies with all the money- I mean look at it! It isnt exactly conservatively styled. Whilst the over 50s may hold much of the wealth that hardly means the younger set cant afford a £600 camera- and if they cant they'll stick it on credit.

Pentax have been slow to target younger buyers in the past- this maybe an attempt to address this.If they cant attract younger buyers they may not survive as their customer base will unfortunately dwindle.

Whether this attracts new blood to Pentax remains to be seen I really hope we see a few new members on PU with a K-01. Then they can show us how capable it is.

One things for sure, this camera has increased Pentax's exposure dramatically. Presuming the reviews come out in a few weeks, glowing comments about the image quality should coincide with the new DSLR releases.

Yes of course, big, rectangular, chunky, bright coloured, big control knobs and the red & green buttons - its obviously the Pentax/Fisher-Price solution for young up & coming photographers .
