PEF vs DNG

I use DNG as it is the Adobe raw format. I think it may be reasonable to assume other camera makers will adapt to DNG and it will become a future standard. As Adobe has championed DNG, then I believe that it is a very future proof format.

Hi Bernard.
I use “DNG” with my K10D, as I only have Adobe elements four. Have not been able to learn the correct use of that very well.
I also have a Panasonic LX3, that needs the Silky-Pics, to convert the raw files, which I think is the same for Pentax PEF. I find Silky-pics, impossible to get my head around.
So I stick with DNG, and struggle away, with Adobe.
Take care.

When I had the ist Ds and then the K20D I used PEF. Now with the K-5 I use DNG. DNG files on the K-5 are about the same size as PEFs. On the K20D they were huge.
I started using DNG as nothing (except Irfanview) could read K-5 PEFs when I got mine, and have stuck with DNG ever since. In theory at least it is a fileformat which should still be around for many years to come.
Check how big DNGs are on the K10D before deciding to swap.
You can convert PEF to DNG but I don't think you can convert DNG to PEF I'm afraid.

I used to use PEF but my new computer has Win 7, 64 bit installed and as yet there is not a codec for this - unless you pay for a special program. So I have recently started using DNG where there is a free codec for Win 7, 64 bit and I now have the facility of using thumbnails etc. to quickly view DNG photos.

Which was why I chose PEF, but I'm now wondering if I made the wise choice.

As long as you have software that can read PEF's, there is no problem. I use only PentaxPhotoLab3 for RAW development. I recall reading of PEF-->DNG translators. Were Ricoh-Pentax to abandon PEF, running conversion warez on one of my several Windoze machines would be no hu-hu. (That's Hawai'ian for NO PROBLEM!)

Stick to PEF - you can always convert them to DNG on your computer, where they will be smaller.

You can download the free DNG converter at Adobe, it also use more compression so your RAW will be closer to 8MB then.

Always used .DNG with K10D, K20D and now K5 - the only downside is slightly larger file sizes on your model but memory is pretty cheap now so I can't really see a reason to use PEF.

I used PEF till I upgraded to the K-5. It seems the K-5 uses a slightly different version of PEF that my aging copy of Photoshop doesn't recognise so I've had to move over to DNG. I've found no difference* in doing so.

So-
1.-I get the impression that most use DNG
2.-PEF "may" have a limited existance (and is not consistant between cameras)
3.-DNG files are larger, but I store them on a 1TB drive
4.-DNG files are larger in the camera, but I rarely take more than 100 shots per day and carry 2 spare 2GB SD cards in my bag- So again low concern.
Assuming you're all not winding me up (perish the thought) I think I'll change over to DNG.
Many thanks to all who responded

They are larger when the K10D, K20D, K200D or the Km make them, with the newer camera there is no differnce or if you convert with your pc they are even smaller and the differnce is also gone.3.-DNG files are larger, but I store them on a 1TB drive
So PEF (camera) => DNG and DNG (camera) => DNG you will get the same file size almost, take a couple of bits.
Besides shooting with the camera I just named in DNG you will gain a small speed bonus because the processor compress DNG that much so it's faster done.

Stefan, I am now confused.
I understand that if I take a PEF on my K10D it takes up 8-10MB which I then transfer to my PC where it also takes up 8-10MB.
If I convert that PEF to DNG it will be less than 8-10MB???
If I take a DNG on my K10D it takes up 14-16MB and then takes up the same on my PC - how is it reduced in size?

Bernard,
The size and conversion aspects are all about the esoterics.
The issues (as you've already identified) seem to point to you using DNG in the future without too much of a problem.
The only other consideration will be the post-processing software you use - if that also handles DNG then you will have no problems. End of story.

I have a K10D and have started saving my pics as PEF.
Should I have chosen DNG and if so can I translate from PEF to DNG
I've also saved some in DNG so can I convert those to PEF?
regards
Bernard
