The wonders of compression my friend
Think about ZIP and RAR that's basically the same.

And the software on your PC compress the files more without any information lost then your camera does.
Also the file-size difference from the camera comes from the difference in compression.
The DNG is hardly compress at all while the PEF are quite good compressed with the K10D.

The compression is btw all done without losing detail so all the information is still there but packed in such a way that it takes up less space.

Sorry Stefan I'm still lost

When I download a PEF file to my PC -its 8-10MB
When I download a DNG file to my PC -its 14-16MB

At what stage does the reduction in size happen

When you Convert the RAW (either PEF or DNG) files from your camera to DNG with for example, lightroom, Bridge or the free DNG converter you can download at Adobe.

It's an extra step in the process but i'm happy to do it though because it saves quite a bit, certainly with the files from the K5 now...

But I have a choice of PEF or DNG in the camera (K10D).

I then download onto my PC as PEF or DNG - I don't understand where the converter comes in (unless I want to change PEF to DNG)

I use PEF but may consider changing and updating my whole library if Pentax continues to be so... unstable... sold twice in a few years... seems like DNG might be safer for future support.... I mean if one of my old computers with an old copy of Aperture was to die... how would I open up images from a format that went extinct in the future?
Fired many shots. Didn't kill anything.

If you choose to shoot PEF because they are smaller files you can convert them to DNG in computer. The DNGs thus generated are smaller than those generated in camera.

Ah I think I understand now- sorry for being so thick. I got the impression that any DNGs on my PC could be reduced in size and ouldn't see how

Iberg I missed your comments as it was on a previous page, but thank you anyway.

As I said I've now changed my RAW to DNG and will ponder whether its worth changing the PEFs to DNGs. If the Adobe converter does it as a batch then most likely -If I have to do it one at a time then very unlikely

Thanks all

I believe you can, you can also import and directly convert from your SD card to your computer with the converter I believe.
I haven't used it in a long while since i got lightroom...

I have saved in both PEF & DNG and have noticed no difference between the file size the qaulity or the processing.
I use PSE 6 as I cannot work out how to use "Silkypics PENTAX Digital Camera Utility 4"
Has anyone used PENTAX Digital Camera Utility 4 to good effect? If so is there a good tutorial anywhere, the online PENTAX Digital Camera Utility 4 help is as confusing as the software.

OK Stefan,
I've downloaded DNG converter 6.4, installed and run it.

It does do batches.

My PEF folder has 5.11GB of files which turns into 4.31GB of DNG files (being 8-10MB each) Those that the camera took as DNG are 14-16MB each

Pentax Browser v3.1 (Silkypix 3.1) will show the DNG files as thumbnails only but will not load them or load them into Pentax Photolab.

Photoshop 7 does not load PEF or DNG files
Irfanview will load PEF but not DNG.

You got the plugins?

http://www.irfanview.com/plugins.htm

DNG is one of the "rare" formats.

PSE 9 opens DNGs for developing.

Silkypix has a really, really poor UI.
Lurking is shirking.!
