Which version of Irfanview do you have? I have 4.20 and it has DNG as a standard in the Camera RAW selection of suffixes.
I didn't download a separate plug-in for it.

V 4.25 --- I find that the latest is v4.3

Help-Installed Plug Ins , lists a load of DLL files none of which is DNG

Where do I find Camera RAW selection of suffixes?

If I load Irfanview first I can display a load of DNG thumbnails but get the message as recently displayed when I double click a thumnail

4.27 but I can't remember if I downloaded the plugins for raw or not.

If you remove "FORMATS.DLL" from " ProgramFiles Irfanview Plugins" it stops reading DNG format files.

Its says you need the same version for plugins as the program.

And on the Irfan web site:
# FORMATS - (version 4.30): allows IrfanView to read some rare image formats.
(Formats: PSP, G3, RAS, IFF/LBM, BioRAD, Mosaic, XBM, XPM, GEM-IMG, SGI, RLE, WBMP, TTF, FITS, PIC, HDR, MAG, WAD, WAL, DNG, EEF, NEF, ORF, RAF, MRW, DCR, SRF/ARW, PEF, X3F, CAM, SFW, YUV, PVR, SIF)

I'm in the process of downloading 4.3 and Plugins 4.3 but my connection is a bit tardy so I'll probably leave it to play and install it tomorrow

I got the impression that any DNGs on my PC could be reduced in size and ouldn't see how
The DNG format allows for JPG thumbnails to be embedded for quick display. Pulling apart a DNG off a K20D it contained both 4672x3104 JPG and a 640x480 JPG. The first of these adds substantially to the size. The PEF, on the other hand, contains a 640x480 JPG and a 160x120 one. When you use something like Photoshop to convert the PEF to a DNG it only carries these smaller thumbnails across and doesn't create a new humoungous one, hence the smaller size. I've not investigated a DNG from the K-5 yet, but I'm guessing it no longer contains the full size JPG.

Bernard if you click open you will see Files Of Type and a drop down box.
You should see one DCR/DNG/EFF/MRW/NEF/ORF/PEF/RAF/SRF/X3F - Digital Camera RAW format.

It shows in the drop down but if the FORMATS.DLL is not there, you get the error message.

Ok Gwyn found that exactly as you show

Selected it then tried to open one of the DNG files (recently converted from PEF) and get the error message as before (is that screen shot readable?)

Bernard

ps FORMATS.DLL (v4.23) is there but doesn't include DNG in the listing that is appended to the line

Hmm.Maybe it is because they are converted to DNG, not original DNGs then. Weird.
Have you tried one straight from the camera?

You could try contacting Irfanview about it, and see what they say.

Yup straight out of the camera it loads OK so the converted files are "dodgy"
I'm still at odds as to why straight out of the camera they are 16MB and converted they are 8-10MB - is something missing

SkyRider explains why DNGs are so big with the K10D/K20D in the post above - 2 embedded jpeg thumbnails. There is nothing missing in the smaller converted DNG, other than the larger thumbnail I suspect.

Interesting that it is converted DNGs that give a problem. It really may be worth contacting Irfanview about it.
