I think if the price is right this little package could just be too good to ignore, I'm starting to wonder about the battery with all the little extra's, if it has wifi/touch screen/ two card slots and in body video IS, it'll soon munch that DLi109?

There was no grip option for the K-30/50 from memory, as that was one of the model placement/pricing item trade offs Jules. If this is the successor then there may well not be a grip, but look for that in the K-3ii?

The K-30 had a smaller battery mostly as it was shaped to include the AA battery adapter. If they drop that idea then it could be well juiced up, assuming that box of a grip is empty. Wifi shouldn't need to be on permanently so all in all it could be made to work I think...

Oh and sensor stabilisation in video worked in the K-5 series without the lights dimming when it was activated

No no no Richard .... You've still got 2 years use and life-cycle left on the K30 before you're allowed another camera

He He, get all that Richard, I'm used to K5/K3 (Not quite as good as K5) battery life, I can spend two or three days in the lakes without going near a powerpoint sometimes, and I'd want it to last out, the DLi109's are small and light so it would be no biggie in the end I guess. I was more thinking of the videographers, having that battery fall flat at the wrong moment? Yes the K5 had sensor stabilistion but it did not have all the other doo dads this baby appears to, it all adds up. You are correct in thinking that there was no OEM grip option for the K30/50 but the SoNikCan (Borg) collective offer them on the lower-mid range bodies, so why not? It's another thing to sell to the customer and it would give more than adequate battery performance I'd say, you could get quite a few of those little batteries in a grip, and while they are at it, GPS in the grip too!

I'll be honest though: 1) I did go through a period of being very unsure of the K-30 after the aperture motor failure and then later with the mirror out of sync weirdness, but that period has passed now and it seems robust as it should have always been again now.
2) IF the sensor stabilisation is real again during video then I WILL advance my 2 year plans quite considerably. That features is genuinely worth a lot to me, as right now I unfortunately have it turned permanently off, having been burned by it with ruined footage a few times too many.

Before this K-TBA was shown I was 99% convinced I probably would not buy another DSLR.
But like Richard and others, I'm interested in a body that can shoot great stills (a given with PENTAX) and record excellent quality video footage which is malleable in post.
The vari-angle screen totally suggests that Pentax have designed a camera with video very much in mind, so my hopes are high that this time they have made a truly competing product. Let's face it, not many DSLRs have WiFI and NFC. Plus it looks to me like the SD card door is large enough to hide dual slots which would be another first in the mid-level range. The K-30/K-50 were the first mid level cams to offer full WR and dual edials, so who knows.

I know, and interesting you picked a 30 or 35mm lens, as I find that quite an awesome focal length on the APS-C pentax for the type of video work I like to do.

Genuinely not a fan of having to keep the button pressed continuously to enable the stabilisation, but am open to the idea that it might not be such a big deal in practise.

Agreed. As mentioned before the K-30 was a perfect match for me. I was prepared to take a hit on some things they had chosen to omit and luckily what they did include lined up with my requirements perfectly. I wait to see what's been included or not on this new one, and once again hope that it aligns with my list of improvement wants. What's interesting for me is that the improvements I want aren't addressed by simply buying the more expensive model up the line, so I'm hoping for a deviation from the norm here, which a flippy screen for example is indicating.

Yes well I had some doubts too when I first knew about it, in fact the seller didn't even realise until I asked for some sample footage before buying.
But yes, in practice it's no bother at all and in fact gives you one more level of control.

I bought the AA battery adapter plus 4 rechargeable AA batteries as a back-up for my K50 but for the cost I might as well have bought a spare standard battery, which is less bulky in the bag and holds power for longer, so I'm not totally sold on this feature.

Me neither, I doubt we'll see it again tbh.

The idea I think was to save you when you were off the beaten track and could find AA batteries in a remote store somewhere etc

Actual chance of that being an issue? Slim to none.

Fully agree. The adapter approach really did tie up a lot of space that could have easily absorbed a larger capacity battery.

Having said that, I've not had a time where I've run out of juice, and I carried a very cheap 3rd party battery in case. But yes, ditching the adapter seems a good idea now, given nearly everything else these days is lithium ion packs rather than AA reliant. As I said above, I had the adapter, but I never used it, so it's loss would be a compromise that I'd once again be ok with.

I usually start my day with some rechargeable AAs in the adapter in the camera and I carried around the battery that came with the camera as a spare to save space
