Thanks for that suggestion, but no I had checked this first. There is something wrong because I heard from the repairer (Pentax) that they had ordered new parts. The camera has been away now for five weeks. very depressing.

There do seem to be a few stories around regarding faulty K-7s but it's difficult to say anything as you never hear from people that don't have any problems.
Bit like SDM really, yes there have been quite a few faulty 16-50mm and some 50-135mm lenses but if you went over to the other Pentax forum you would think that every DA* lens was going self destruct after 2 weeks and take their owner with it.

More likely that those who do have problems will not admit it for fear of being told 'told you so, should have bought a C***n' from friends. Some friends!
I know from a friend who works for a large retail outlet that there are a fair number of faulty cameras produced, most seem to be from the larger producers. perhaps volume production leads to more failures simply by numbers made. The percentages may be no worse than for the smaller manufacturer, who knows.
it is very dissapointing when it is me who gets the 'Friday Afternoon' camera.

I am just keeping my fingers crossed because mine came from a large retailer on Ebay. Although basically new (bashed box) and VERY cheap it only came with 3 months warranty and that is up soon.

I can imagine! I did the update last night after reading your post and thought twice before doing it, however mine took the proscribed time and works perfectly.

I changed the camera set-up to adjust aperture with the front e-dial, and now the aperture is screwed up, so I figure the e-dial just gave up. It's just coincidence that it happened when I upgraded the firmware.
I'll see what the service is like from Pentax Canada.

No problem with this update for me
... just another middle-aged guy with a hobby. I have an extreme macro learning site at extreme-macro.co.uk - Pentax-centric, your feedback and comments would be appreciated!

1.03 is doing all I need, so I may wait a bit for more testimonials.

No problem with the update for me either - but I don't have a macho man brick (aka grip).

The problems with the e-dials-
try turning off "auto EV " if set to on.
I had the same problem as while back this year after an earlier firmware upgrade.
I was advised to turn EV off and it did the trick-
maybe it will do the same for you guys-good luck
