Grumpy GrandPa, Recently Retired.
Gotta K-3iii now, had a K-S2, K50 and so suffering from a relapse and so buying digital camera kit.
Previous addiction has resulted in using Zeniths, Yashicamat, Chinons, Minoltas, Samsungs, Fujis, Cosina, Kodak, Lumix, Canon, Nikon and Pentax etc etc - have tried most makes in the past 50 years. Love cameras - love taking photos even more

I have tried on two different days to update the camera and nothing happens because when you open the downloaded file it shows that version 24-1.bin is actually version 24.bin. Anyone else gound this problem?

The file you downloaded should should have the name 'k1_v241' if not then you have the wrong file.
Download the correct file which you then need to unzip. In the unzipped folder look for the bin file named 'fwdc228b.bin'
Copy this bin file to a cleanly formatted sd card to perform the firmware update.
My opinion however given the issues caused by the recent 240 update is that you wait several days before you update to ensure no one reports any further issues.

I have done that and when I opened it to the "bin" file, it was k1_v240, so the camera would not update. Why?

I did not notice at the time of updating , but the BIN file inside 'k1_v241' is indeed named fwdc240b.bin. Looking more closely the earlier '240' firmware had a fwdc240b.bin created on 17/11/23, whereas the newfwdc240b.bin file was created on 18/12/23. Also my zip program reports different CRC codes.
So the files though named the same, are different. My K1mkii had no trouble recognising the update and completed install with no issues.
I cannot speak to the K1 update, but a quick look inside the update for that shows a file named fwdc228b.bin also created on the later date 18/12/23

I've downloaded both the latest K-1 & K-1 ll firmwares and the bin for the K-1 is definitely named 'fwdc228b.bin'

I can see now that it's the K-1 ll that you are trying to update so that file you have is indeed the correct one (although misleading) and should update.
What version is your camera currently on, 230 or 240? If it's 230 there should not be an issue, if it's 240, try rolling back the firmware to 230 then update again with the latest 241 firmware file that you have just downloaded. Presuming you still have the 230 file saved from when you updated it!

It is 240, not being a computer geek, haven't got a clue how to roll back to a previous software edition. Any tips please.

You will need the 230 firmware bin file. I'm presuming you updated your K-1 ll at some point to version 230.
Do you still have that file in your downloads? If you do, run that 230 firmware update and you should get the option to go back from 240 to 230. Job done!
If however you don't have the 230 bin then you will need to acquire it from somewhere. If a download isn't available, then maybe some kind person on this forum who has this file might let you have a copy.
If I get chance this afternoon I'll do some research to see if I can find a download link for you.

Hi again, so looking back, I found a source for earlier versions of the K1 MKii firmware. I downloaded versions 2.1 and 2.3.
Interestingly when looking inside the zipped files, both showed BIN files with the same name as the current file namely fwdc240b, albeit with different creation dates and CRC codes. I copied the file inside the 2.3 download to a correctly formatted SD card and tried the update procedure. I was offered the option to go back from 2.41 to 2.30. I cancelled and went no further.
I renamed the BIN file to fred, but the update option was not triggered. I then renamed the BIN file to fwdc241b and again the update option was not triggered. Finally I renamed the BIN file back to its original name fwdc240b and the update option was triggered.
From this I conclude that to trigger the update option the file name needs to be fwdc240b , at least for version 2 firmware.
All this does not explain why the latest update was not triggered on your camera. but it is quite obvious now that it is not the file name that triggers the update option , but a flag/marker inside it.
If you wish I can email the earlier firmware, but offer no guarantees as I did not continue with the update from 2.41 to 2.3

Yea you can Barrie. There are a good number of people on the Pentax forums who have done so and if I'm not mistaken (though I could be) I believe the K3 allows this as well.
Any way, if in fact it can't be done then the option simply won't be made available.

Is this just the case because of the 2.40 update issue or can it always be done?
