I might have to do a black K1000 at some point, keeping an eye open for a cheap but working example. I will use an etch primer of some sort as I have had trouble with chipped paint on the orange ME Super

Will be getting a film test as soon as the new light seals arrive.

Very nice, the K1000 looks like a factory finish!
seeing as that prism you sent me fitted ok I have a 'spare' spotty f which I bought after being told it wouldn't. Mat have to give that a lick of colour in the next few weeks

Yes, DM. A good primer is very, VERY important. I ignored my own advice and painted the SP1000 without. (the K1000 and Trip got the last of it). As a result, a big flake of paint came off, when I was polishing. On the front, just above the lens mount, you can see where I touched it in with a brush.
The top plate had a nasty dent on the prism housing. It straightened out pretty well, but you can still see ripples, where the metal stretched.
It's a nice colour tho', eh!... Saab blue, with two coats of clear lacquer.
Backhouse.
I think your Spotty F will look nice in..... Custard yellow!

Problem is, the MES has a plastic top plate and the bit around the lens mount is the same. Can't really use aggressive primers on those.
The base plate was fine with a good rub down with fine abrasive paper and a few thin coats of orange enamel, the only problem was with getting paint to stick to the plastic.

Probably powdercoat mine rather than paint, very hard wearing and sticks like s§!t to a blanket. I have a big bag of antique white (milky colour) which might look pretty cool (would match my car ), or a translucent rootbeer colour which is kinda love or hate (but might go well over brass)...
or something really bright with a pearl fleck to it

I'm getting tempted now, my Spotty doesn't need a lick of paint but she may well be getting one soon anyway...
I foresee a visit to Halfords in the near future.

Thank you, Stratman.
I hope others feel the same, when I put these three on ebay, soon. I think they will either get much higher prices than unpainted ones, or much lower. It's going to be fun to see!

I'll be intrigued to see how they go. The only snag is that I don't think you could actually make a business out of it - if you charged your time at a fair rate then you'd probably be asking for about £60 per camera (in the case of my MES that would be £20 for the camera, £20 materials, and 2hrs to build it).

Oh! There's certainly no living to be made from it. A bit of beer money, perhaps.
I think there is a Japanese chap, who does make a living from repainting Leicas... To a very high standard, though.

The blue spotmatic looks super and Dangermouse, I recognise that orange, Land Rover G4 by any chance :
The clear laquer is a total must as paint is actually very soft and fragile and its only 'finished' and more hard wearing after the laquer has been applied. If I ever spray anything its always a must, minimum 2 coats
Nope, Halfords "Warehouse Orange" aerosol enamel! The blue spotmatic looks super and Dangermouse, I recognise that orange, Land Rover G4 by any chance :

I rather thought that enamel would be ok without laquer, it seems to be more of a problem with adhesion than with keeping the stuff on. I may well do a black K1000 in future, that would be simpler as with the metal panels I could give it a proper rub down, prime, spray and laquer just as I did with my alloy wheels. The laquer would be applied after the white lettering had been reinstated.
The MES has been re-sealed and now has a roll of HP5 loaded, I'm just hoping that it isn't suffering from the shutter-fails-to-cock disorder as I have a suspicion that on a couple of occasions I've wound on and nothing has happened. Then again, I've fired the shutter 40 times in succession without a film and had no problems. Hopefully it won't play up now, or at least if it does when I try to wind the first frame on I can still remove the film and avoid wasting it.
