More from the hip

This seems to be my latest pastime These were shot on the K5 during a 20 minute stroll around my office yesterday at lunchtime. I was very pleased with the comparitive lack of noise compared to my ISO 1250 shot with the K20 a couple of days ago. I've added the ISO value for anyone who might be interested.

These have all had minimal noise reduction (around +15 in most cases) in Lightroom.

And this last one almost didn't make the cut because the chap is just on the edge of the in-focus zone, but I thought he looks like James May in 10 years time when his career has crashed and he's become a drug pusher

Tim, I think these semi-clandestine shots work very well. Can you tell us how you hold and fire the camera?

Thanks Alun! For these shots I had the camera hanging off my right shoulder, with my hand resting on it as if I was keeping it from swinging around. When I saw a shot I would just move my hand slightly so my fingertips were just beneath the camera grip and my thumb was resting on the shutter. Slight adjustment to the camera angle, and then press!

Of course, once I got home there was rather a lot of cropping and rotation to do

There's quite a lot of tips on the internet, just google 'shoot from the hip photography'.

What an unusual and effective set, Tim. I really must have a go at street photography again. The performance of that sensor is unbelievable, Tim. That's been the most notable improvement in recent years, hasn't it?
Best wishes,

Andrew

Great shots Tim. REAL photography in my view. I have sort of done a bit of this and wonder if the addition of a cable release might make shooting easier?

I think the traffic warden rumbled you!

Nice shots! I do a bit of this sort of stuff myself sometimes, though with the camera round my neck. Most of the ones I shoot in malls are done like this.

Two Stares and Cash on Delivery for me - but something's lacking: can you add some noise? They're toooo smooth!

Nice set Tim but they seem a little flat, might be my monitor but I think they need a bit more contrast and lightening up a bit.

These are obviously not taken in Kuwait then

Thanks folks!

The traffic warden is probably my favourite as well, i had just walked around the corner and there they were! On my left side though, so I had to spin around to take the shot, I think that's what she's looking at.

Andrew - the sensor is certainly impressive, an easy 2 stop advantage over my K20D, possibly 3 or 4 if the shot is exposed to the right. However I would add that Lightroom 3's noise reduction provides a similar advantage. The ISO 6400 images for instance had a fair amount of noise prior to applying NR.

Aliengrove - I noticed my typo about my office too late to fix it I should have said 'around the square my office is situated next to'

Fatspider thanks for that I will have another look at them. They seemed fine when I finished editing, but now they're on here they do look a tad greyer than I remember...

These are very good, Tim. The kind of photography I like best, and do the most... Poorly!
The security guard is great. Very dynamic!

A method I use, is to have the camera hanging round your neck, on a strap. Jacket zipped up to the bottom of the lens to hold the camera level and steady. Wired cable release plugged into the side of the camera, then running up jacket sleeve and down arm to hand. Both hands in jacket pockets, you can wander around clicking away with nobody noticing. The camera is not to your eye, your hands are in your pockets... So you can't possibly be taking pictures, right!. Everyone behaves naturally and no trouble!

I'd like to see more of this kind of shot, here. - More of this and fewer bloody flowers and insect macros!
No man is worth his salt, who has not been banned from at least one Forum, and two Flickr groups.

Thanks Mowog for the comments and the great technique! It's genius, I'm going to try it as soon as possible!

Nice shots

The look from that traffic warden makes me glad I have not illegally parked in her area
K10D, K5 plus plenty of clueless enthusiasm.
