Hi,

That's a very nice shot, I'm waiting for the 27th, see mail below, this should present a good photo opportunity although I doubt that Mars will appear the size of the moon..

Dam, that message took seven years to reach me, I'll have to speak to my ISP about their service.

Thanks Chris for picking it up, It never entered my mind that it might be a hoax.

Nice pic Tim, and what a bargain!

As for Mars, 34.65 miles away: my gosh, the tides will go crazy! I think the Americans should blow it up in case it gets any closer and scrpaes the top of the Himalayas!

This is the sort of photography I don't do - don't have the correct gear. But when its done by experts I love looking at their pictures - as in this case Tim. What's an MTO lens?

Perhaps we should have a one off competition, best shot posted after 12:30 :
Of course we would have to make adjustments for our other time zone members. One second thoughts it may be to complicated

Thanks chaps!

David, the MTO is a Russian lens. I believe they still make them today (not hideously expensive, about 300 Euros I believe). I think Rubinar lenses are from the same people. They are usually T mount, but when you buy them you can also get various adapters (including Canon and Nikon, but not Pentax :evil. Mine came with an M42 adapter, as well as leather case, 3 enormous coloured filters, and caps. It should also have an eyepiece so you can use it as a telescope but mine was missing that part. One of these lenses with the eyepiece sold on ebay for £200 yesterday The £76 I paid was 'buy it now', BTW.

The thing is pretty fat, only about 30-40cm long, but about 15cm diameter Reuben posted some pics of the same lens on this forum here where you cannot even see his camera behind the lens because it's so massive. One slight problem I noticed is that I need to use two hands to focus the thing, because it's difficult to wrap one hand around it because of the large diameter!

Anyways ... it's a fun toy. Might have my previous moon shot lens (a Tamron Adatpall-2 500mm mirror) on the market soon

I saw your link earlier Incognitox, but only looked at the first couple of photos (cool interface on that site, by the way!). However I had some free time today and had a browse. Now I really wish I spoke Polish - this shot wasn't taken with an MTO 1000mm was it? It is flippin' amazing!!!! Looks more like it was taken from moon orbit
