Really sorry to hear that particularly the fact it was all you gear . I do hope it's all cleared up quickly and somebody has picked up and looking after it safely for you.
Just in case, like other have mentioned I would be thumbing through the home insurance terms.
Hope it all works out for the best.

I am so sorry you lost all your kit, hope you get it back soon.
I am now writing all my serial numbers down and writing my name and address in my camera bag.

Good idea James, just had a novel idea! I think I will buy an extending keychain and a motorcycle disc lock stretchy spiral thing. Clip the two together for extra length. Clip one end to my belt and the other to my bag that way I am not going far without my kit.

Really bad luck Mark. Fingers crossed you get your kit back.

As to those of us who have got the wake up call, maybe this sort of device could be what we all need? (not this exact model perhaps) link

Thanks for all your messages folks.
I'll wade through all the paperwork and see if there's any hope there.
The police finally phoned back and said,'we've been closed since yesterday evening so if it was found nobody would have been able to drop it in etc. ... Come in on Monday'

If I do ever replace it, I'll start with a K20D and a fisheye and go from there

DarkMunk: Don't give up on the household insurance - assuming you have some - as I confirmed with my insurer that I was covered for my gear, despite a high cumulative value each item was under their limit so they said no problem. But I haven't tried a claim yet.

Good luck.

JohnX - that is a good suggestion but apparently they don't ship to my home address in Worcs?

Devastating

I do hope you get some good news about your gear

My camera is marked with an iTrak chip/sticker as are most of my valuable gear [ laptops , iPodTouch , passport etc ] I'm optimistic that this would help get it back - but I'm not totally confident .

Please let us know any serial numbers that you can remember - perhaps for security they could be passed to the Mods , so they aren't on public display

It might help if you put a card in the shop window of local newsagents.
List what is lost and where, offer a reward.

I really hope that you get them back.
Friendly Regards

That's a great offer from DAE0707 - perhaps it would be worth contacting other places too .

just how expensive is "bag" insurance in the UK? I know my complete bag is insured, every item "replacement cost" and I pay less than €50 per year. Value is given as around two and a half thou.

Check it, you might be surprised.
