Lightroom 4 AND Photoshop?

In conclusion what i personlly would like to see ADOBE bring out next would be LIGHTMENTS OR ELEROOM the developer from lightroom matched to the editor from elements. no organizer no library which i dont need and never will need.
I know i can get the same lightroom camera raw in photoshop but £900 for something i could never do justice too is far to expensive.
The combined total of lightroom and elements appears to be around the £150 mark at the moment, so as most of te software has already been written for this new program a price of £120 seems resonable.
Now we just need to get Adobe to make it.

Photoshop CS6 is £613 for PC on Amazon. We paid about £350 for CS5 on special offer. We could upgrade, but don't really need to at the moment.

Me too!

The problem now (or very soon) with Adobe software products is that you need to keep upgrading. Skip a version upgrade and you have to pay the full amount again.

For me the post processing and managing of the image collection is a huge part of the Photography pastime, so its' just as important an investment as cameras, lenses, mounts and other accessories

For me, there are not enough changes between Photoshop versions to warrant upgrading. I usually skip 2 or 3 versions, then upgrade. That will not be possible now and I probably will not upgrade at all due to the cost v benefits of Photoshop to me. I rarely use it.

My system of cataloging is transfer pics from camera, select possible club entries, work on them, put into folder 'club prints - year - subject' works for me

Thats a great system and very intuitive. But assuming you are using an OS 'browser' process to manage that (mac Finder or Windows Explorer) then there are risks to the integrity and consistency of the collection. You won't have the same security of 'validation' when copying or moving large amounts of data, nor the ability to introduce external devices and manage their content as easily than if you use a cataloging / database type system (DAM - Digital Asset Management is the 'Jargony' term )

A DAM process (such as the LR Library module, or imatch database, Expression Media etc) can perform on the fly updates to the contents of folders (such as file changes or metadata adjustments) as well as search for a huge range of tags, keywords or other image properties. And a 'browser' approach can only display the contents of folders & image thumbnails when the files are actually in place and 'online'. Also, carrying out your move / copy actions from within the DAM system gives you automatic file integrity checking.

In the case of imatch you get additional support for where there are multiple files with the same filename / extension, giving an instant analysis of the differences - eg this one is bigger / newer / its location history and the categories and property fields it has active. This helps you instantly decide if your are dealing with a binary duplicate or one of your 'derivative' versions created during some editing.

Sounds like a foreign language.
I download to windows picture library, rename the folder say ZOO RAW 2, then when i have worked on the raw files i save them as a tiff and move them to there own folder named wait for it ZOO 2.
This means it is my second visite to the zoo, i also so have two other folders called ZOO and RAW ZOO which i but all the other folders in to.
I also back them upto disc.
If i was a professional my be i would need a good catalog system, but then if i was a well paid professional i would employ some one to do it for me.
Smeggy says cataloging is pictures is all part of the photography pastime as is processing the images, i enjoy the processing, well what bit i can manage but the catalog part is like eating my christmass box of roses with the paper on.
But each to is own, ones man meat is another mans poison ETC.
The forum would be a boring place if we where all the same.

I'm expecting PSE 11 to drop through the door any day now.

I've never used PSE before, normally I use PS-CS4. I originally bought PS-CS, upgraded to CS2, skipped CS3, upgraded to CS4, skipped CS5, and I'm about to skip CS6 as well if PSE11 has all I need.

I don't particularly enjoy cataloguing, but it's kind of done automatically in lightroom anyway, and is a means to an end . My input to cataloguing is simply having a sub folder for each year and then sub-sub folders for each shoot. I keep identical folder structure for Original files and exported/edited versions

In lightroom I keyword the exported pics, but that doesn't take that long even with a 1000 image shoot as most of them can be done all in one go
