Welcome back Feeb! It's lovely to see you return after that ugly departure thread.

As you are probably aware Pentax brought out the K5 a couple of months ago, and it is awesome Price has been slowly dropping, down to 970 at SRS now, plus 80 cashback if you act quickly - I think the cashback expires in early January?

If you've been using the D700 I don't know if the K-r is going to be what you're looking for...

PS Many congratulations on your wee boy!

i just need something that takes lovely photos, that i can use for the odd pro job and that is LIGHT! The specs of the D700 were amazing, the weight was something to behold! Plus my baby is what you would called a 'pramless' baby, i wear him on my back all day so i am unable to cart around an enormous camera, i can assure you that i am just excited to be going back to something built for a human, and not an ox

What sort of lens range are you looking for?

Welcome back. K-5 (act before 13th for Cashback) with the 18-135. Gives you 120 Cashback and is light and better then some 'Pro's' that are on the market would be my tip.
Plenty of upgrading for later as well.
Kind regards

It's nice to be nice!

Pentax K-5 with D-GB4 Grip, to many lenses to mention by now (serious LBA by now), TC's, Lowepro Slingshot 300 AW, Manfrotto 028 & Redsnapper RS-283 with various Heads plus various Camera Clamps (I collect them). Pentax AF 360FGZ, Pentax AF 240FT, several Metz 45 CT-1 & 5 with stands and 'Blow Up' Soft Boxes, Flash Triggers, and various Macro gear.

Well, the APS-C Pentax equivalent of 24-70 on 35mm would be the DA 16-45 F4, or the DA* 16-50 F2.8.

Do you really want something that overlaps so much with the 18-135 range?

The DA 12-24 (or the much less expensive Sigma 10-20) might be a more useful range.

Personally I would go K-5/DA* 16-50mm f2.8/DA* 50-135mm f2.8

Thats your 2k taken care of.

The K5 is the camera the K7 should have been the body is identical (wonderfully small), but it has much better high ISO, somewhat faster AF, more FPS, and live view that works well. The K5 sensor is the reputedly the same one as in the new Nikon D7000.

Where shall I start? Extreme High ISO, small and light on its own but with the extra grip big enough for my hands, All the features you expect from a 'Pro' but for less of a price, lenses are fully backwards compatible (with limitation for M42 and the old K rages, cheaper then the competitors, 16MP should be enough even for 'Pro' pictures, high FpS with the latest update, Full High Def Video (also with some limitation), Weather Sealing and I could go on and on.
For what you are looking at in a camera and what you are used to from your Nikon, this will be everything and more than you will ever need or want for the feature.
I jumped shop from Nikon 35mm to Pentax K-5 and I don't look back.
All in all one of the best Pentax ever bought to market and it will take a chip out of the 'big two'.
Kind regards

This good

Remember that no crop camera is going to get near to a current FF model ISO wise but the K-5 is currently one of the best (if not the best) in it's class.
