K7 - Worth It?

You possibly have to log on for Classified's. I think you need
a minimum of 100 posts to actually advertise a classified. I'm
not sure if they require a minimum to actually look.

The Canon seems to be on AVforums I stumbled on it by accident
looking at that 50mm f/1.4 that Mike-P is after. I'm not after
one sold mine last year.

This tale has so many twists it's beginning to get tangled up on itself

I wish him joy in whatever camera he finally decides upon - whether it's Pentax , Sony , Canon, Minolta etc etc .

I suspect we have a way to go yet before the journey is over - and judging on the past - we have this sort of thing every year

Chris. I actually jumped ship from Sony to Pentax, and have used both the K7 and A700 a fair amount (about 20,000 frames shot with each camera).

As far as bodies go, the ergonomics of both cameras are excellent. This is a personal thing.

I find TAv in the Pentax invaluable. I can't believe that Sony left this out in the A700 (they could easily implement auto ISO in M mount, but they don't). Also, it's nice to have focus adjusting in the Pentax.

Both are decent enough bodies. Where the difference is for me is the lenses. Sony can't offer you anything like the DA/FA Limiteds. Pentax can't offer you autofocus Zeiss or legacy Minolta glass.

I find it astonishing how the A700 replacement hasn't been announced yet.

In your shoes, I'd choose on the basis of lens line ups.

The K7 is a fine camera. It'll take care of you. I'm not upgrading to a K5 until my K7 has 50k actuations under its belt. The extra dynamic range would be great, but I can make do with what I have just fine at the moment.

I've not fully decided actually, I'm in negotiation over possibly a Canon 40D but I am still thinking about a used K20D from SRS.

Although from the reaction here it seems like Pentax users aren't really interested in new people buying their system, all I've ever asked for here is help, and as I said earlier I've had to ask here because there are very few Pentax users on a lot of the other boards, apologies for bothering.

Yes I've been considering other systems as I don't have any buy-in to a particular system and I've been trying to buy as cheaply as possible but with with something as good as possible which is really whats led me to the 40D.

Thankyou to those of you who have tried to help and I am sorry if anyone feels I have been taking the piss but I've not, I came here looking for help and advice from people I imagined would be Pentax experts, so again I'm sorry if that has irked anyone.

If anyone feels they don't want to get involved in a thread that asks for advice, then don't. Someone will be happy to take up almost any question.

If you haven't handled the 40D you might want to do so alongside a Pentax K20D, after which my guess is that you will be rather impressed by the high standards of Pentax construction.

Whatever you decide though, perhaps it is time to decide and then you can get on with the image makning, which is the point of it all.

Thanks, I have not handled a 40D actually only the 50D but I had thought they were very well built?

I did handle a K20D at one point and was very impressed, it was what led me to look at the Samsung a year ago, as it was slightly cheaper.

I am tempted by the option of having a warranty on used gear from SRS and also I know that its a debate that rages there are a number of lenses I would be looking to get (50mm or similar and Sigma 10-20) which are not available in stabilised form on the Canon wheras on the Pentax would be with the body IS so I am tempted to go down that route.
And yes I just want to get something so I can go and do whats important, taking photos!

Your Profile on talk-photography indicates that you have/use a Canon 40D.

Just buy anything. You'll soon know whether you like it or not.

You posed a question on that forum about the difference between EF & EF-S lenses. I'd suggest you do your own research and determine roughly how big an investment you might have to make.

Yeah I had changed it when I was changing my profile,etc but your right I need to have a look at lens options both for Pentax & Canon.
With Sony I knew what I would buy so need to compare to the other 2 systems,

It strikes me as more than a little self-important to think of this as wasting your time. A question was posed to a forum, no-one had to reply. Also, when people ask for advice there is no obligation to follow it (otherwise it's an order rather than advice), so I don't really see why people get so frustrated if someone doesn't follow their advice to the absolute letter.

Perhaps the forum guidelines need to be modified to make it clear that people may not follow advice when offered. Either that or ban people from asking for advice if they don't 100% intend to buy Pentax. Although that might require the name of the forum to be changed to Pentax Buyer/Owner (as one can easily USE a demonstration model in a shop). Hmmm. Conundrum.

Meanwhile, back on the real world...

The OP has merely tried to gauge the opinion of a number of fourms to get a well-balanced view (let's be fair, you're unlikely to get an unbiased view by asking the users of one brand-specific forum).

Perhaps the reason that other brands sell more than Pentax has something to do with the stand-offishness potential buyers encounter when asking a question on a forum. On the other hand, it does keep the "walled garden" of Pentax secure. "It's a local brand for local people".

I agree with you, Robbie. A bit of a 'herd mentality' has taken over this thread!

My advice to the OP, after learning he is considering bodies from different brands, is to forget comparing body X to body Y, and start comparing the manufacturer's systems as a whole. There are plenty of threads on that!

And has he considered Nikon? Plenty of good bodies there, old and new, so may be a better bet for the indecisive photographer!

I admit if I were looking for a DSLR now, with no history of owning one previously, I would choose Nikon.

I had nothing to add to the thread, and probably should have stayed out of it, but it was a shock to read about the Canon, especially after your last time here, when after lots of advice you bough a Sony.

I hope you can make your mind up soon, and enjoy whatever camera you decide upon.
