K5 writing to card

Hi,

I've had my K5 since January 13 lovely camera but I've noticed that it's getting slower writing to card after taking single shots or longer on continuous shots.

Is this a know problem that can be resolved?

Is this the same card? If so, have you tried formatting it in the camera when you delete all the images?

If you have previously-stored data still on the cards, it could be that the camera is looking for free space on the card so that it can write to that space. Try running Windows Defragmenter on this card to see if there's any improvement.

Hi, if you format every time you clear your card rather than use delete there will be no need to defragment the card.

I'm intrigued that firmware updates always seem to give the impression the camera is working quicker. Perhaps there is some defragmentation being secured in the camera too when this happens.

When a card is reused it should be formatted in the camera. This will indeed prevent problems. Although we might "get away with" not doing so, it is possible that precious images could be lost.

I have never heard the suggestion that SD cards could be defragmented, that seems very dubious to be honest. The file structure of a PC hard drive is very different to an SD card in a Pentax camera.

It is very different, and has its own problems.

In particular you can run into storage allocation related performance problems if you tend to delete individual images. As it's a photo forum I won't bore everyone with the 'puter stuff behind it but the easy fix is to occasionally reformat the card in the camera and never fill it up - always leave some spare space if you can.

Don't forget, the more you ask the camera to do, the longer it will take to write the image...

Also check whether you have the Lens Distortion correction enabled

That takes an age to do and slows down writing considerably!

Thanks MattMatic that was most help full, it's now writing back quicker. I'll start formatting my card once I've wiped it from now on.

Thanks for your help guys

I always format my card when replacing back in the camera.

There's no need to defragment the card if you just delete all the files either.

There is absolutely no need to do this.

No it's exactly the same. FAT32 file system.

This is not the case either. The FAT32 format of the SD card is exactly the same whether done in camera or PC Card slot.

If you get problems it's because of a bad card or a bad specific device not the type of device that formatted it.
