Out of interest how do peeps transfer files from the camera? Do you connect the camera via USB to the computer or do you remove the card and use a card reader on the computer?

In my case it deppends on the computer and how lazy I'm feeling.
if my eeePc then I use the built in card reader.
If my Laptop I use the built in reader, unless I'm also using an external hard drive because for some reason my old lappy wont do ESATA and SD at the same time.
If a machine which doesn't have a built in reader, I use the camera with a USB cable...... well actually if I'm honest I spend 10 minutes cursing and swearing that I used to have a nice fast SDHC card reader and where the **** is it, then I find a cable and use the camera.
I do find readers are generally faster than the camera, and if downloading several cards it's less hassle to not have to keep swapping cards in the camera just because the card reader doesn't have a door on it. Plus (and this isn't a major consideration given the quality of the kit but still..) it seems sensible to minimise wear and tear on the expensive camera in favour of a cheap card reader.

I have always copied from SD card (using fitted card reader), left the images on the card until I've had the time to carry out an extra backup process (usually the DNGs and any video files onto DL DVDs).
Then I format in the camera. Its always worked OK, and I swap the cards around between the K7 and another bridge camera we use.
But its always good to think of other ways, so I dived into the Sandisk website and found the following page, covering the formatting of their SD cards on computer operating systems .. link
There's similar instructions for all of their range, and they give a fair bit of guidance on the functionality of the various 'FAT' systems and the formatting options, so it seems reasonable to believe that if the manufacturers are offering such instructions then the process must be sound.
Clearly, this is from a card point of view, not a camera point of view. The question remains on what differences there might be between the OS and in camera formatting processes. I know that historically there has been the guidance in the 'literature' about in camera formatting, but maybe as time and technology has moved on it could be updated?
I have found that because of using the two different cameras, I can't see on one camera what was shot on the other, so I just know the card came from the other camera and, and its convenient to just format in the camera. But it would be good to know more about the differences and wider pros & cons.

I always format a new BLANK card in the Camera simply because that's easiest. But for already formatted cards I copy the images from the cards in a reader onto 2 drives ( for backup ) and then delete the images off the cards and put one of them back in the camera ready for shooting I never reformat the cards

Am I right to presume that process only works if you have originally formatted the card in the K5, and then keep using the card only on a K5?

There's no need to reformat SD Cards, just delete the files
and check with Scandisk or Minitool.
You can't reformat an Eye-Fi Card without damaging it.
It will delete the programs. Delete the files is the only
way.
I have other files and Custom Icons on several of my cards,
so I just delete the photos after transfer to PC.
With a K-5 and firmware v1.01 it could possibly damage
an SDXC Card if you try to format it. Needs to be v1.02
at least. Hopefully it won't be recognised.
The official SDFormatter v4 is available from
https://www.sdcard.org/consumers/sdxc_capabilities/using_sdxc/
This will do a FULL WIPE if needed.
I usually carry out a "Partition Surface Read Test" on my
cards using Minitool
http://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.html
Takes probably 15 min and shows any bad sectors
or sectors if you are American

No, not at all. cards I've formatted in the K-5 work in my Sony compact camera and other Cameras I've tried. They also work in card readers. The FAT file format is pretty much universal.
There's no benefit to formatting the card in the camera over formatting it via windows/Mac while it's plugged into a card reader. I just do it in the camera for convenience. I don't have a reader permanently plugged into my computer

I know nothing about eye-Fi cards, but if that's the case, then good point

this discussion is in danger of decending into an argument, and no one in history has ever won an argument on the internet.
We have all put forth our points, I respectfully suggest that anyone who wishes to now has the necessary information to make up their own minds and we should end it before someone says something they'll regret.
Thank you for not taking it into an argument and saying something you'll regret.
May the discussion continue for all those interested or the mods close the thread.
