K5 Sensor Issues...

Pentax should have had the proper story ready..... now rumours
will spread and cause loss of sales. It would take about 5 mins
to put the glass under a microscope and see if the problem is
within the glass in which case a 3rd party could be held responsible.
Makes me think the problem isn't within the glass

In my honest opinion, if your sensor was clean in the first place and then you get 'muck' on it it should be resolved with a good clean but if you got the 'muck' from frame one than you may have the fault and want to replace your camera.
I am not going in to 'how widespread the problem is' as this is something I can not comment on but some have clearly a problem but some may just need a clean.
Pentax.jp should really come out with a message what is going on. Also if it is oil it may be 'burned in' over time when the sensor gets hot and that would create an entirely different problem.
I don't think that we differ to far from each others opinion, I may just have a problem of bringing proper over what I mean.
I would definitely not expect a brand new body out of the box to have any muck on the outside of the sensor glass. If I did however the first thing I would do is give it a clean, scowl at a Pentax Logo, and then go and take some pics Smeggypants wrote:
You say it! "A wet clean sorts it"!SmutjeUK wrote:
Meaning that if you did not have had the problem first but have 'blobs' after 700 shutter activations it should not be the glass that is at fault but may just be 'oil splatter' and should be easily cleaned.
But then that wouldn't be 'the problem' as in this widespread K-5 production fault, but just muck on the sensor glass. I get sticky spots on the sensor glass of my K10D and K20D fairly regularly due to crap getting in from regular lens changes in the field. A wet clean always sorts it.Meaning that if you did not have had the problem first but have 'blobs' after 700 shutter activations it should not be the glass that is at fault but may just be 'oil splatter' and should be easily cleaned.

Muck embedded in the glass or between the glass and the sensor chip itself, obviously can't be cleaned

Does anyone know if the people at SRS verify that the replacement K-5 is free of the sensor marks before shipping it out?

I would imagine they would check all existing stock and return it to Pentax for replacement.Does anyone know if the people at SRS verify that the replacement K-5 is free of the sensor marks before shipping it out?
It's an awful lot of K-5s worldwide though. It seems the rate of faulty units is around 50%.
As the production fault is fixed and clean units are shipped out we would expect the figures to go down from now on though.

I spoke to SRS on Monday and was told that Pentax were checking each camera before sending it to them. He had checked the first three on arrival and all were OK. As he had twenty more coming an a few days, assured by Pentax, I ordered one. Should be here any day now.
They were very helpful, I might add (SRS).

Where has Pentax or anyone stated that 50% of the units are faulty? You cannot base your assumptions on a poll here.... I had heard its around 5%, but again I don't have first hand correct information from Pentax.

Chris assured me they are checking the cameras before sending them out.
Smeggy - you cannot draw that conclusion - those who are satisfied with their K-5 don't respond to this sort of thing. Plus many many owners are not on forums anywhere to report or deny a problem.
The number is unknown but I seriously doubt it is as high as 50%.

Strange post Your complaining about the figure of 50% which has been discussed before and is about the figure shown in two polls and then quote a figure 5%? where has this come from? It's stated above that SRS have 23 coming in and an earlier post in this thread referred to 17 replacements. At 5% this would mean SRS have sold around 450 cameras? There would also be a hell of a lot of happy users about

I shouldn't have to tell anyone this, but make sure that you read
DrOrloff's statistical proof on Page 4 of this thread before dismissing the 50% faulty figure. People reply to posts without reading the previous ones
Obviously the 50% figure will go down as more cameras are checked before reaching the shops.

An early morning post Algi...
As the saying goes 'there are lies, damn lies and statistics'. You can't take the polls here and on other forums as being the definitive '50% are faulty' figure. As I said earlier I don't know how many are fault, surely only Pentax would know how big a messup it is....
p.s. 95% of all statistics are made up...

The 20 new cameras thet SRS were getting were not for replacing duff ones AFAIK. I got the impression that they were mostly new stock satisfying back orders. I think that this camera is selling well, dispite the problem, which SRS told me was a small number in relation to total sales.
lets not blow this up out of proportion. We all want Pentax to thrive.
