Pentax dismissed the K20D banding and SDM problems of the 16-50mm/50-135mm as insignificant as well and because if this they have sold a lot less of the DA* range than they could have. Infact on the USA site it has bordered on hysteria at times with everything bar the end of the world being blamed on SDM failures. Hopefully they will just get on and admit there is a problem and sort it with the minimum of fuss.

Otherwise I can see the K-5 being the best APS-C camera Pentax ever made also becoming the worse selling because prospective buyers will be as sceptical as they are with SDM.
Exactly.

I just picked up my K5 yesterday and the first 6 shots I took were testing at f22 on a sheet of glossy photo paper, with the 35mm macro ltd. I wanted to see if the problem was there initially, It isn't!! Serial no, 3913....
But that doesn't mean it won't appear after some use,

I am about to update the firmware and then check it again, but I doubt that will have anything to do with it, just covering all bases.

It will be interesting to see if the problem is something that appears after use. Don't forget to shoot some video as well just in case it's heat caused. Someone on the other forum mentioned that the (PhotoMe) shutter activation count was 0 or 1? (can'remember which) instead of a few hundred like the earlier cameras, indicating either the shutter hadn't been fired or it had been reset.

I want to wait a little before shooting video and see if it appears just shooting pics, I am being very methodical with it at the moment.

My K5 shutter count started at zero but then so did my K7 :
The K5 is up to 85 on the shutter and I have checked it 3 times already and it still looks ok, so fingers crossed all will be well

That's a better way of doing it At least you will know
(or hopefully you won't know because the marks don't appear )
what the exact cause is.

Good to know about the shutter count as well.

I think we'd go a long way more than most people, to be honest - although you wouldn't get the loan camera!

How do you find the shutter count on your K7?

Get a program like PhotoMe (free download). Open a recent photograph and scroll down through the info, until you get to shutter count.

When I initially contacted SRS about the problem with the Sensor they told me that they were at that time up to 17 for return (09/12/2010.) Would that add weight to the theory it's only a certain batch, I don't think it's indicative of how many units SRS have sold as it must be quite a few more than that? If the next person to send one in asked them "how many?" maybe we couls keep a little better handle on it?
Cheers Jules...

I don't have a K-5 so can't comment first hand.

My thoughts are that if the sensor and Bayer filter are supplied as a complete assembly by the manufacturer (Sony, I think), surely it's a problem introduced by Sony, not Pentax. I suspect their 'clean' assembly room is perhaps not so clean.

Conversely, if Pentax assemble the sensor/filter components themselves, the problem originates there.

It'd be interesting to know if these spots have developed over time. If they have, it might not be a dust contamination issue, more a micro-organism one. Maybe a fungus of sorts.

Pure conjecture I know, but will we ever know for sure.

Mine is a very late release,

I stated in my earlier post I was going to update the firmware, but I found it had already been updated at the factory to ver. 1.01, I have never known Pentax to do that in the past.

Still no issues with mine, I will shoot some video with it at the end of the week and see what eventuates.

Looks like it may be a problem with the glass covering the sensor:

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1036&message=37177457

I was ready to plump for it but may wait a while. I wonder if Pentax will extend the cashback period?

I wonder if Chris at SRS will announce here when he has known good stock available?
