This was my response from Pentax UK.
Dear Sir,
Thank you for your enquiry.
I understand form your email, that there is a spot on every picture, always in the same place.
In this case - most likely - the sensor needs cleaning. Please contact the service center to arange it:
http://www.pentax.co.uk/en/Photo_Service.html
I hope that your question has been answered to your satisfaction.
Should you have further questions regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact us again.
When replying, please make sure this email is included.

Your Email:
K5 Suffring from the "Staining on Sensor" issue just to left of centre a small line of what appears to be smear of gease or adhesive? Also a small very well defined blotch below this, they are not dust bunnies as the staining does not appear to be on top of the AA Fllter but below it.
I have not been able to remove it by cleaning, and therefore it is unremovable save for servicing...
Could you tell me if this would be under guarantee and how long the
turnaround will be as I am starting to rely on it for business use...
Cheers Jules...
Technical Hotline: 0870 7368299
I had a far better response from SRS
But I sure am glad I kept my K7 as well

Quite a few people have reported the sensor staining issue. I wonder how many noticed a problem in their normal photos. I suspect that most only discovered a stain when they tested for it by photographing a white surface at very small aperture. I wonder if similar problems would be found on the older cameras, K-7, K-20 etc if we went looking for them. It would also be interesting to know if other makes of camera that use the same Sony sensor have identified similar problems.

Funny but I test my cameras against a white background about once every three month. I know I am in the minority but I guess everyone who relies on his camera to bring in at least some % of his/her monthly income will probably do the same checks, maybe not as regular as this but I guess that most will do it from time to time.Quite a few people have reported the sensor staining issue. I also have usually my camera serviced every two years unless I am in an extreme area (moist air or dust/sand) when I have the camera serviced pretty much straight after I be back home.
I grew up with 35mm and I still have my first ever bought camera (F2) and it is still in 1a condition mechanically because of this (even the look of the camera may suggest it has been rolled over by a tank and fallen from the 20th floor on to concrete).
It sometimes is a small price to pay for a regular service as it would cost me dearly if I would be unable to take any pictures.
I guess I will keep this up till the K-5 will retire for another Pentax.
As for the sensor 'bubbles', for me they are visible but I mistaken them for dust, I probably would have figured out that something is wrong when I start taking macro pictures and blow them up to A1 size. Now I am forewarned and I know that I can not offer this service for the time being.
But that's only me!
Kind regards

It's nice to be nice!
Pentax K-5 with D-GB4 Grip, to many lenses to mention by now (serious LBA by now), TC's, Lowepro Slingshot 300 AW, Manfrotto 028 & Redsnapper RS-283 with various Heads plus various Camera Clamps (I collect them). Pentax AF 360FGZ, Pentax AF 240FT, several Metz 45 CT-1 & 5 with stands and 'Blow Up' Soft Boxes, Flash Triggers, and various Macro gear.

I have just unpacked mine, but not taken any photos yet. How does one test for this problem? Does it show up on the dust alert, or only on images?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Only on the images I'm told. Test by taking a shot of a plain white wall at F22 with flash. then have a look on a computer

The K5 is to be my first DSLR. It's the only one (IMHO) that fits the bill for what I'm looking for, quality of shots, ruggedness & video now and again. It also fits well in my hand, "feels" right and has a menu system that even as a newbie doesn't make me tear my hair out.
Reading the response from the guys at SRS is the reason that I will still go ahead and get a K5. I don't think that I've seen such a good response from a retailer (or manufacturer; Pentax take note) when there has been an issue.
I might be wrong in putting my faith in Pentax, but from the response by Chris in SRS (who I have not met or even spoken to) I will give them my trade (and trust) any time with any brand.

Thanks and I will tomorrow at the first opportunity. What a shame as this camera is really something else. Unfortuate publicity wise for Pentax too.
Much like the banding problem on the Canon 7D, but that seems to have gone away.
Even my G10 was supposed to have had a sensor fault with a line of dead pixels, but mine was not affected.
Hopefully my K-7 will also be OK, but knowing my luck......

I tested my K7 last night, it was spotless.

Well, some good news. I took a photo of a nearly white wall using f/22 and flash as suggested earlier and the image is clean. I can see no evidence of any smears or blobs, just an even greyish image.
Hopefully, mine missed collecting the bonus (unwanted) extra feature.

There is evidence of this problem affecting far more than a small percentage.
Since a problem was reported, their camera must have that problem.
It was the same thing when some people saw some de-centering on the DA* 16-50. All of a sudden, everybody had that problem on their lens. It died on it's own after a while, but it gave that lens a bad reputation it didn't deserve. And only a very few were actually affected.
