I tried several lenses just to be sure. Cleaned the sensor.
No back up camera.
My serial number starts with 3828 for what it's worth.

Wow Gwyn you have loads I'm still not sure what I'm going to do with my faint marks but I would send it back if I had as many as you, plus the one very dark blob.

I've sent Chris@SRS a message, asking for advice. Not much else I can do at this stage.

OK - since I don't have a K5 I really should stay out of this -
BUT
To my mind , there are so many of you with this that Pentax are not going to be able to wriggle out of it .
Why don't all of you contact the dealer you bought the camera from ?
Chris knows how many he has supplied from SRS and, though under our law, as the supplier/retailer he is responsible for rectifying the problem [ sending them back to Pentax ? ] he is probably also wondering just how many he still has in stock are affected .
I really hope that you all have this sorted out as fast as possible - particularly anyone that doesn't have a back up camera body

Clearly it's a fix-under-warranty issue. I would be stamping my feet for a replacement camera as well though, although there's not much chance of that happening. At least the cameras are usable so you can delay sending them back until a convenient time, by which point hopefully the problem, the responsible party (Pentax or Sony), and how to rectify the issue (complete new sensor?) will be clearly identified.
Ouch - I'm sure this is the last thing K-5 owners are worrying about, but this is going to dent Pentax's recent profits

Checked mine and it seems ok. Has anybody with the defect tried the pixel mapping function in the menu? Settings page 4 just above dust removal

I have reported the issue to Chris. Clearly it seems widespread and my guess from reading all the problems is there must have been something wrong on the production line. And even worse, quality control hasn't picked it up. Pentax will have to sort this out, it will damage them if they don't. It seems to me this warrants a product recall. This is my third successive faulty Pentax.
Gwyn, yours is badly affected. I wouldn't even consider working around the fault. I appreciate it's a pain to send back a camera - I've already done it six times.

Do you think they will replace the camera ?. I once sent a K100 D away for repair and the cost to repair was more than it cost to replace considering the man hours spent on the repair and price of parts. They sent me a new camera in the end this is awful news for Pentax after so much positive feed back on the camera.I have reported the issue to Chris. Chris is in touch with Pentax, so we'll see what happens tomorrow. I feel bad disturbing his weekend.

I have no idea if they will replace it. I hope so. My K20D was repaired five times. It went through three sensors and two PCB's, plus other things. It was eventually replaced (with a faulty K7 which was replaced again) but I couldn't understand how the expensive cycle of repairs benefited anyone (apart from the service agents and postal services who must have made a fair bit).
I judge customer service not by product faults but how those faults are dealt with. This is clearly a widespread problem affecting many cameras to some degree. It is not an immediately obvious problem to spot so there may be many more exhibiting the same issue. Dealers must be wondering how much of their stock is affected. All I can say is I'm very confident that SRS will do their best for customers. I know how I would deal with it but I can only hope that Pentax do the decent thing.

I have an identical blob to Dr Orloff.
I'm not sure what to do - I don't shoot plain walls very often, I don't shoot at F22 very often. I could clone it out. But - why should I? I can't bear the thought of sending it back and losing it for months but it seems to be a manufacturing error which Pentax should correct.
What do you suggest? What are you going to do?
