K3 v KP

On Friday of this week a local dealer is running a `demo day` for the KP, a chance to see and feel the new camera. The dealer is very close to me so am tempted to go. A bit soon I know but has anyone any thoughts about the merits or otherwise of switching from the K3 to the KP?

I'd want to wait until there was one of those nice £100 extra trade in offers and a more sensible initial asking price. The K3 has many higher grade features not least a very fine 200,000 shot quiet shutter, lots more connectors, twin card slots, better sealed all mag alloy body, top LCD etc. When I traded up from K5 to K3 it cost me about £340 nett.

Both are fine cameras, and both have strengths in different areas.
Sounds clichéd / boring / maybe rude, but it really is a case of determine your wants and needs, and then seeing which best covers those.

Certainly go and have a look but the KP seems more of an enhancement to the K-70 line than a K-3 upgrade. Depending on your preferences you might find the KP a downgrade but only the person purchasing can ultimately decide that. You may prefer it! Its release hasn't exactly set the PU forum on fire with 'must get one' as has happened with other new models. Though perhaps its a sleeper yet to shine.
For a new to DSLRs camera purchase it may be well worth considering, as for yourself only you can make that decision.

On paper there are a few 'merits' despite it not being an actual proposed upgrade path:

1. New sensor - a very capable one looking at photographs that are starting to pop up.
2. Better high ISO performance and higher possible ISO
3. 5 stop SR
4. Improved AF
5. Electronic shutter (for live view and 1/24000s exposures - can't even think of what one needs to be shooting to need that speed haha)
6. Look and feel - very subjective, I personally love the design.
7. Wifi
8. Better LCD (image quality wise and flip out)

The only downgrade is the fps I believe (8 to 7, so hardly an issue). Everything else, is an actual upgrade.

Given this is a mid range model, one can only imagine how good the actual flagship APS-C will be.

Question I'd ask myself is, will this be sufficient or given that the K3II successor is meant to be around the corner, do I wait, do I want to wait, or do I need to wait?

If I had extra disposable income I'd totally buy it for the look and feel

there is no reason to change if you have a k3ii as the kp is not to replacment for the k3ii

so if the reading inbetween the lines are correct it sounds like it may be a year or so off

and it could be that its the k3ii size but a baby k1

Quote from Pentax Rumors of 27th January...

The just announced Pentax KP camera is not the replacement for the K-3 II model. A new high-end DSLR from Pentax will be announced later this year to replace the K-3 II. According to the French website Les Numérique, the K-3II replacement will be announced in 6 months:

But can you wait for the next (not quite so) big thing?

I remember you said £374 Bill!

Fascinating how some on here have such good memories I merely make the point that previous cameras have been upgrades at over £1,000, quickly dropped in price and/or had pentax sponsored trade in deals effectively knocking at least another £100 off. The KP fun as it might be is grossly overpriced if it is only mid market in my opinion so my advice is to wait a bit .If that is for the cheaper KP or the new flagship in the autumn is up to the original poster.

It's quite interesting to see how people find it overpriced because it's 'mid' market; instead of looking at the price to feature ratio. What's out there, 'mid' market, at this price point, with such a comprehensive, 'non gimped' feature list? Genuine question as I am only familiar with few other models and non seem as attractive at 1k as this for general purposes.

Regarding the price, the significant point might be neither whether it is mid-range, nor what else is out there at a similar price point, but rather the price-to-feature ratio when compared along the Pentax scale of things.

Looking at the differences between the K-70 and the KP, although several features of the KP can be regarded as improvements, they are not significant enough for me to want to spend double the price of the K-70.

But, of course, to each his own.

Cheers.

You might like to have a look at what this guy does - Type "Pentax" next to "About" and you will be able to see side by side specification comparisons with a number (including the K3) models against other brands.

I always find it interesting

Why do we think a magnesium alloy body is mid-range? This is a fundamental feature of the flagship line, and I've lifted this set of features from the wex description:

Quote:
New flagship APS-C model aimed at advanced-enthusiasts
24.3MP APS-C-size CMOS sensor
New generation CMOS sensor and high-performance imaging engine
Dustproof, weather-resistant, cold-proof down to -10°C
Five-axis shake-reduction system with compensation effect of five shutter steps
Customisable features including grip replacement system and control panel
Anti-aliasing filter simulator
True-to-life reproduction of gradation and texture
High-speed operation
Effective noise reduction
Handheld photography at night with maximum ISO of 819,200
Pixel Shift Resolution System captures 4 images of same scene, shifting the image sensor by a single pixel for each image, then synthesises them into single composite image.
Maximum shutter speed of 1/24000 second
Optical viewfinder with nearly 100% field of view and 0.95x magnification
27-point autofocus system with SAFOX 11 module
Full HD recording with external microphone terminal
3.0-inch LCD monitor with vertical tilt function
Wireless connection capability

That looks a bit more than mid range to me?
Best regards, John

Maybe Pentax are being more realistic in their pricing strategy for camera bodies; look at what you are getting compared to what else is on the market. This is being pitched squarely at the mid range mirrorless sector. And don't forget the K1 went up in price a few months after its launch and not just in the UK either.
