It works by merging 4 identical images. When using bulb mode how can you ensure you have 4 identical images ? Your shutter speed will be slightly different in each one.

Not sure I understand what you mean? Bulb is manual with longer times available? I can do a 30sec PS exposure in other modes but not a 40sec one in bulb. How does it differ? Thank you for taking the time to reply.

I suspect the reason is that the camera pre-programs the four exposures which it will ensure get taken and merged. I suspect the folks at Pentax think you might give up halfway through the sequence and leave the camera in limbo and it won't know when to start the 2nd, 3rd and 4th exposures leaving the camera with the shutter open when it shouldn't be.. Its something new anyhow and in its first incarnation so if enough users are like-minded (and tell them) perhaps they'll make it a possibility in a future firmware if it isn't something likely to lead to a problem..

I have had the same thought but assumed that in their design they probably assumed movement in the scene over a time longer than 30 seconds being very likely so left it out. Of course there will be times when we control the subject , ie still life, when maybe it would be handy but even then I guess we can also control the light and the exposure time hmmmm I talked myself out of it now ........

I'm guessing:
The camera normally knows the overall exposure time by calculating it up front and it can then divide the entire exposure by 4.
With Bulb, it hasn't a clue how long you are going to be standing there and so, cannot make that calculation?

Possibly true for old Bulb mode but now we can use it like any other with set time and camera responsible for both opening and closing the shutter in which case there does not seem to be a reason not to allow it if this condition is met. Guess I'll write to Ricoh. Never hurts. It seems like an easy to address software issue?
Thank you all. Much appreciated.
