Substitution and replacement are actually different words and although the meanings can overlap there are a variety of major and sometime subtle differences in their useage.
The English language is a rich and complex beast that grows and develops constantly and although sometimes it can seem that words have identical meanings, it's rare that this is so. Convergence of meaning can occur though.
In a similar vein, there were two dental instruments that started life in the early 1900s with subtle differences which as time went by became less and less understood. Eventually they converged into one and manufacturuers just made one and gave it whichever labelling the customer wanted. They substituted one description for another, but it was not a replacement.

Just a bit of fun, I have noticed in the past Pete does seem to get a bit excited and start looking for web sites when trying to prove his point so I thought I would give him something to look up .. (and it seems I was not disappointed).the last half of the posts did make me smile regarding the correct usage of the words replacement and substitution.

"Replacement" seems the obvious plain-English word to me for what the K-7 is in relation to the K20D.
The K20D is been placed in the dustbin (as far as Pentax is concerned), and the K-7 has taken the place of the K20D as the current top enthusiasts' Pentax DSLR. Re-placed. It's been placed in the position that the K20D once took.

The K20D feels better, solid as a rock!
2x K10D bodies, 2x FA 28-200 3.8-5.6, DA 18-55, A 50 F2, 50mm Macro, 360 FGZ. Still saving for the 60-250 DA* Also have a Z10 35mm and a K1000 just for fun. IF PENTAX IS THE ANSWER, WHO CARES WHAT THE QUESTION IS...!

The K7 felt odd at first, however now it feels just right.

I've always wondered, is the premium 4 star of better quality then the 3 star on the K10D or does it mean you've 4 steps instead of 3?

If the comment about quality stars relates to the JPEG quality, there is also a Premium setting (4 stars) on the K20D.
Yes John you are correct, I just checked and my K20 was set on 4 stars, I must have mixed it up with something else the X70 I think but I have sold that now anyway. If the comment about quality stars relates to the JPEG quality, there is also a Premium setting (4 stars) on the K20D.

Given up pondering the Canon D7. Their forum ain't as humerous as this one!
what this post does tell me is there aint much between the K20 and the K7 as far as the users are concerned (apart from the cost).
gonna keep the K20d and i reckon by January 2011 the body will be fetching £1000 the way the prices keep going up !

Pete,
I think you've got it on the right track now - the difference between the K10s, K20s and the K7s are their respective users. It's also their common bond. Even for those that substituted ( sorry! replaced) their K10 with a K20 with a K7

Still in love with my k20d...and still RTFM.
No expert on this but I'm getting the impression that what with the changes in manufacture quality +/- and problems with the sensor I made the right choice to buy and keep this fabulous camera...what do you think???
